McCain is reported to be going to drop the attacks on Obama after the latest polls show that the approach is not liked by the majority of voters with Obama opening up a gap on McCain over the last week which has seen outrageous chants against Obama from crowds at McCain rallies that have seen McCain himself feeling so embarassed by his supporters shouts that he has spoken up to support Obama's character. He now needs to come up with some new approach maybe on the financial crisis to get people back on board. Pundits are wondering what Sarah Palin can bring to this less pitbullish approach over the coming weeks.

After spending a week in a largely fruitless effort to hinder Mr Obama's rise in the polls by attacking him on character issues, Mr McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin noticeably cooled their rhetoric over the weekend.

The tough approach coincided with increasingly inflamatory comments from Mr McCain's supporters at Republican rallies. Recently the mention of Mr Obama's name has been met with cries of of "terrorist" and "kill him" from the crowds.

LotusFlower, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Backfire!

Will be interesting to see if they are able to keep the negative character-based comments to a minimum - especially Palin, it seems like words just have a way of slipping out with her...

I think that she will play the bad guy to McCain's good....

The change in strategy is welcome news. The ugliness of some in the audiences that seemed fueled by the past strategy, repeating untruths they'd latched onto, had indeed become dangerous.

When people are unsure of their futures, many become frightened and angry, not a good combination when what is required is calm, rational thought.

A companion article.

I knew he'd find out his tactics didn't work. I just wish he had kept it up long enough to ASSURE a loss on Nov 4.

You gotta remember, there are a lot of brain dead people in this country who think he's the best thing since sliced bread. Some of them will still vote for the clown and the pitbull with lip gloss
