The Republican party candidate John McCain has conceded the US presidential election to Democratic rival Barack Obama. This page contains profile information for John McCain; you can check out the Barack Obama profile here.

Official Biography

John McCain was born in Panama in 1936 while his father was serving as a naval officer. The Panama Canal was under United States military control at the time. Over the years, the McCain family travelled all across the southern US and pacific until settling in northern Virginia in 1951.

After going to naval academy and ending up with marks that put him near the end of his class (894 out of 899), he signed up for active duty with the US Navy. He became a pilot and crashed his plane twice, before going to war in Vietnam and getting shot down in 1967.

He was a prisoner of war for over five years, and is alleged to have been tortured, as well as put into solitary confinement for two years. He was released in 1973 and returned to the US with injuries that left him unable to lift his arms above his head.

McCain won a seat to the US congress in Arizona in 1982 and became a senator in 1986, where he has served until running for president in 2008:

John McCain was born in 1936 at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone, Panama, to naval officer John S. McCain, Jr. (1911–1981) and Roberta (Wright) McCain (b. 1912).[2] At that time, the Panama Canal was under U.S. control.[3]
After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1958, John McCain began his career as a Naval aviator. In 1982, he was elected to Congress representing what was then the first congressional district of Arizona. In 1986, he was elected to the United States Senate to take the place of Arizona's great Senator Barry Goldwater. Senator McCain is currently the senior senator from Arizona.

John McCain's reform agenda to reduce federal spending and lower taxes quickly elevated him to statewide office and he was elected to the United States Senate in 1986, after serving two terms in the U.S. House.

Media Profiles

BBC has a full profile of him, as does Biography.com, CBS and just about every other news outlet:

John McCain is the senior U.S. Senator from Arizona and the 2008 Republican presidential nominee.

During their third and final presidential debate, McCain and Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama clashed sharply over tax policies and some of the heated rhetoric that had been tossed between their campaigns.

A Vietnam veteran who survived five years as a prisoner of war, Mr McCain, 72, has risen through America's political ranks to become a vocal force on foreign policy and military affairs.

If the self-styled common-sense-conservative's White House run is successful, he would be the oldest president sworn in for a first term.

This is photo was taken at a McCain rally in Concord, NC close to my hometown. This was the first political rally that I've ever attended as an adult. Although I have voted in the past, this year I have made an effort to be as informed as I could be to make the right choices. I wanted to actually see a candidate speak and got there early to be close enough to take some nice pictures. The feelings and emotions of a live event are several levels above that of watching someone's speech on t.v. I would recommend anyone to go see their favorite candidate, or the opposition, at a live rally. Leaving with the sense of being involved is well worth it.

My thoughts regarding McCain are that he sold his honor to right wing extremists for the chance to become President.  Along with dishonoring his name he sold out his country for personal gain.  He was a hero at one time, but is now totally self serving .  I am a Vietnam Vet myself and can tell you that John McCain has done less than nothing for our welfare.
