James Bulger: The case that shocked the nation

Jon Venables identity has leaked to other prisoners in the jail where he is currently being held and his is now known as the man who murdered toddler James Bulger.

Venables was returned to prison last week after he broke the terms of his parole license. Venables was released on license in 2001 with a new identity after being jailed for the torturing and death of two-year old James Bulger in 1993. Venables and his friend Robert Thompson, who was also jailed, were only 10-years old at the time of the killing.

Although being kept in isolation in an undisclosed prison, it is reported that other inmates and prison officers now know of his presence and there are fears for his safety.

In scenes similar to those in the movie The Silence of the Lambs, Venables is being kept in a toughened perspex fronted cell with guards changing every half hour. Each day he is held is costing taxpayers hundreds of pounds in prison officer overtime.

When Venables and Thompson were released from prison in 2001 after serving less than 10 years behind bars some felt that it was the right thing to do as they were 10 years old at the time of the killing, while others felt that they should have remained in prison for life..

They were released with new identities and strict conditions including not returning to Liverpool where the killing took place. Although police have not disclosed the reasons for Venables return to jail, it is thought that he had made visits to Liverpool on several occasions.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said that Venables' return to jail demonstrates the success of the system that punishes criminals if they breech conditions.

Update: James Bulger's Mother Denise Fergus: Sack Children's Commissioner

Although he has a new identity, tough-nut lags are certain to know the notorious murderer is among them.News of his presence has swept the jail, which The Sun cannot name due to the legal secrecy surrounding Venables.

One of the killers of James Bulger will have to be given a second new identity costing the taxpayer £250,000, it emerged last night.Officials are resigned to having to provide Jon Venables, 27, with another new name, National Insurance number and passport, to protect his anonymity after he was recalled to prison. To protect him from possible revenge attacks, Venables was given a new identity when he was released from custody in 2001 after serving eight years for the murder of two-year-old James.

"But I want to be absolutely clear that what matters here is that the justice system is allowed to run its course and that justice is done, whatever wrongs are committed. The justice system must be allowed to take the action that is necessary. That is what people would expect and that is what is going to happen."

The fact that they were so young made for some their crimes worse but this of course cannot be so. Murder is murder at whatever age and one would not expect them to be punished more than an older killer.

The crimes of children especially when they are on other children or old people are often seen as somehow greater than similar crimes undertaken by adults. Murder is murder and the punishment cannot be greater because the killers are children. Perhaps their age, 10 at the time, tells us something about how they were being brought up, their own emotional state at the time.

The Judge called them evil. It was certainly a horrific thing to do. I'm not sure that the word 'evil' helps though as it's bound up in religous ideas of 'heaven' and 'hell'.

Whatever happens now to Venables it's a sure bet that journalists are on the look out for Thomspson. The next big scoop.

lloyd bennett

all i know now is this venables lad was let out to soon. they should of done some time in an adult jail. now he has broken his license conditions several times on a life long license he should be left to rot in the depths of the prison service.plus if he has done all that is said ie- child pornography, then the judge must uphold the law and recall him and sentance him to life imprisonment meaning life until the day he dies. shame the death penalty is not around. i just hope there is a god and that venables and his old friend can face up to the boy they killed he will get his VENGANCE!!!! and let god's  wrath fall upon them.

These evil little sods should never have been let out never mind getting new identities.  They both knew what they were doing when they took that boy.  Why should they be allowed to get new identities and carry on with their lives.  What about justice for the Bulger family?

6
Bugleboy

I know these two boys did something beyond belief, but they were only 10. Why is nothing being said about the parents, and their appalling parenting. I seem to remember stories of the boys being allowed to watch horror films they then copied in real life. Were the parents ever prosecuted? We have lots of parents in the Uk today who should not be allowed goldfish, let alone children.

I'm glad SOME people have a sense of perspective and compassion. I agree with you.

i think your right, i mean it was horrific and should have never happened in the first place but they where only 10 years old, and all them stories about them watching horror films like that is totally true, i have also read about that.

I just hope and pray that this sickening piece of dirt is made to suffer horrendously before a true, decent, British Hero delivers the final blow that snuffs this monster out!

Firstly my thoughts are with Denise, Ralph and the family of baby Jamie.  I am from Liverpool and my son Jamie is one month older than Little Jamie Bulger.  I remember this vile, sick and twisted crime as if it was yesterday like every mother of a child hearing it - moreso the fact it was so close to home.  Neither JV or RT should have ever been released.  The fact that decent taxpayers money has been keeping them in luxury and providing them new identities etc sickens me.  In my opinion justice will never be done until thier identities are revealed and they are brought to the streets of Liverpool for the public to deal with, preferably a gang of mothers!!!  They should be made to endure what they made that sweet innocent baby go through.  10 year old children DO know right from wrong - I dont think another penny of taxpayers money should be used....... let the BA**ARDS be dealt with now they are men!

It just seems kinda bizarre and extraordinary to me that as young offenders prior to being paroled Venables and Thompson were obliged to admit and accept full responsibility for the horrific acts they perpetrated on the 2 yr old wholly defenceless child, they abducted and murdered as 10 yr old boys but upon release, armed with new identities and granted life time annonimity the adult, Venables and Thompson are required to live a lie about who they are and what they've done. Little Jamie Bulger's horrific murder evoked strong sentiments in us all at the time of the shocking murder - those sentiments were brought to the surface once again this week with the news that Jon Venables was recalled and was now in custody due to a breach of the conditions of his release.  The truth is, there remains far more questions than answers in relation to the two 10 yr old boys who choose to abduct and murder a 2 yr old defenceless little boy, and whilst we may never know or fully understand with any degree of certainity what the motivation behind this crime was- i feel it is imperative that we hear from them, their explanation of their crime, be it a release of their statements to the probation board-who deemed them eligible for parole.  Whatever means possible-It is in the interests of everyone concerned-Jamie Bulger's Family,Venables and Thompson themselves-We need to hear the truth of what occurred here. If Venables and Thmpson themselves have acknowledged their  appalling crime, have accepted responsibility for their heinious actions-then we need to hear those words. We are unable to move on from the 2 10yr old boys because this is all we have, this is all we know of them.  Jon Venables may be aged 27 today-but in the eyes of the publice-He is still that 10 yr old  twisted  evil little monster.  Secrecy and lies serve no purpose in truth-We asked these individuals to look deep within themselves and face the monsterous actions of their youth-We asked them to accept responsibility for their atrocious actions-and yet in the next breath, We ask them to live a lie.  It is such a contradiciton in terms.  We want them to acknowledge their sins and then we grant them a whole new identity-which obligates that they lie to themselves and everybody else about who they are as people and where they come from. It has been stated that Venables and Thompson did not particularly enjoy a "normal family" life as children-i question the wisdom to grant them new identities-which belies who they are-There is nothing remotely normal about living a lie-about pretending to be someone else. We already know the worst there is to know about these individuals-and yet they are still required to deny their real selves in a bid to pretend to be someone else. Further We are required to accept that these boys are fully rehabilitated but yet must live under a new name and with a new identity.  This begs the question 17 years on from the shocking murder, what exactly have we learnt as a society in the wake of the Bulger Family's personal nightmare??? I think it's time that Venables and Thompson were allowed to be themselves-I think it time that society as a whole are allowed to  openly question, examine and hold accountable Jon Venables and Robert Thompson for the death of the defenceless infant child who's life they so brutally took. Venables and Thompson are adults now-, and as such are more than equipped to deal with the many challenges that life throws up for them.  I personally dont believe that anyone is doing them any favours in keeping them in hiding.  They should at the very least be allowed, if they choose to face the public and express themselves as the grown adults Venables and Thompson that they have become in the intervening years.   If they themselves have learnt to come to terms and live with their abhorent actions as 10 yr old boys-as a society why cant we?? I cannot conclude this without extending my sympathies to the family of Jamie Bulger.  Denise Bulger Ferguson is a further victim of this crime.  She never stood a chance-the boys Venables and Thompson were intent on taking her son away from her-She could not have known the peril her son was in that day as she entered the bootle shopping centre.  In all honesty no mother could. There are only 2 people who can explain the events that occurred that day-and up till now they have been hidden away.

Yes they were children when they committed... was it right to give them a new identities, no I don't think so.... why should they be allowed to carry on with their lives now that they've been released early, has Jamie's mother? No, she has to live with the life sentence every day.... this country's justice system is probably one of the worst I've ever came across.... LIFE SHOULD MEAN LIFE.... you take a life your life should be taken, end of story! and as for using the tax payers money to protect the little a*seholes... why not asked the tax payers what they think THEIR money should be spent on.... I think you'd have a different outcome then.... no-one was there protecting Jamie that day when he taken by these evil little vermon, so why should anyone protect them.... they are now adults, let them deal with life as adults and stop protecting them.  They've done wrong, and as such should be punished.... a wee cushy couple of years was by no means enough and that goes for any murderer, not just these two!

tra

why should he be protected now, what he put little jamie through means nothing to him cos he has re-offended on sex charges, when released from jail he has stricked conditions on his liecence, he got away with drug, voilence, being i a place he should of not been in and to get his s.i.a. door badge and the goverment letting him this as they do a c r b check, even though his idenity changed to get a criminal record check they want to know all your history and they could of not done this by his name change, so the goverment allowed him back in liverpool, the law is not the law any more, who ever this sex charges was on would not of happened if he was recalled on his first breech, he should not be protected now he totally understands what volience and rape is [like they siad he dint at the age of 10] he knew what he done wrong then and does now, at the age of ten they protected him but not at the age of 27 let the inmates do what he done to jamie kill him and in pain then the goverment can use the money to good use, he should be on a normal wing like every one else. if not every one can break the law and get away with it in my eyes

tra

so we know now its not hard to track down thompson he is in the uk and proberbly just the same if any one can do photos of what thompson should look like publiush it all over the net and papers so he can get whats coming to him, and it will the goverment are shit and if it was there child that it had happened to do you think all this protection would be happening

Mr G

Great idea. Take a 17 year old photograph, apply an inexact science to it (artificially ageing the subject to show what he *may* - I repeat, MAY - look like now), and wait for some poor sod who bears a slight resemblance to this fantasy figure to be attacked. Glad you've thought that through.

I've got so much and so little to say on the matter. Soft touch England. A weak country with a justice system that stinks. The death penalty should be brought back. Worst thing they did was get rid of it, especislly now that we have DNA and CCTV and the rest. They don't deserve to live. I really hope that they get done in for good.

I am tired of reading articles from pseudo-psycologists defending and being sympathetic toVenables and Thompson. These "psycologists" claim that both were only innocent boys, from broken homes, who were left with no empathy to other human beings thus murder was the same as going out for a play. In the UK nowadays one can get on with crime and murder quite easily on the grounds of "brocken homes". What this pathetic psycologists forget to explain is that there are hundreds of thousands of children from broken homes who do not go out torturing and killing innocent children, I think these 2 guys are monsters, precisely because they lack one of the most important things distinguising MEN from ANIMALS, which is COMPASSION. Jail is not going to mend them, jail doesn't mend psycopaths. I feel very vulnerable being left with the possibility of having one of these monsters living nearby, perhaps looking at our children like they did with the poor James Bulger in 1993. James Straw is a pathetic person as well, he shouldn't be in such elevated position, he cannot seriously justify what he is doing in the name of public interest. We the British people elected him and he needs to come clean to us and instead of protecting a criminal he should be thinking on what are his duties with the majority of the people in this country.

In which planet the liberal, sickening Labour Party and the British Justice think they live? In any decent country if someone commits a crime, after release they need to live with the consequences of what they did.If they are decent and truly re-habilitated they will need to live with shame and remorse. The public has the right of knowing that they may be living near a criminal,  re-habilitated or not. \However in this country, Labour politicians and the liberal judges dispense hnudreds of millions of tax payers money to protect the identities of serious and not so serious criminals, as if they feel guilty to have emprisioned them. In this country it pays to be a criminal, it seems that life during and after prison is a playground. Venables and Thompson should stay in prison forever, I don't see any reason why they were released at 18, they showed no remorse, they didn't apologize for the crime, and since released from prison we taxpayers have to support them forever???? And I cannot trust the parole board, there rely on people who call themselves psycologists or specialists, but every week we see evidence of criminals being released too soon, and coming back to prison after committing new crimes. VEnables and Thompson should not be allowed new identities, I don't want to have the remore possibility of these criminals living near my children!!!!  Where  is the Justice for the millions of innocent law abiding tax payers in this country?

Maggie Atkinson the Children's Commissioner believes they were too young to be criminally responsible and wants age of criminal responsibility raising to 12 - Government disagree: James Bulger Killers Were Old Enough To Be Tried For Murder
