Raw Video: Georgia Pastor Killed by Drug Agents

Jonathan Paul Ayers, a pastor from Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Lavonia, GA, was fatally shot by police on Tuesday afternoon in Toccoa, Georgia after the police thought he was involved in a drug transaction. While the Georgia police officers had reason to suspect a drug transaction, no evidence of drugs was found in Jonathan Ayers' car after the shooting.

Prior to the shooting, Jonathan Ayers was in a car with woman who was under surveillance for dealing drugs. The police thought a drug transaction might have taken place. After the Shoal Creek Baptist Church Pastor dropped the woman off at a gas station, two undercover police officers approached his car and identified themselves as police officers, according to John Bankhead, a spokesman from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is looking into the shooting.

Bankhead told CNN that Jonathan Ayers backed up his car, hitting one police officer, and then drove his car forward towards another officer. Thinking his life was in danger, the police officer in front of the car shot at Ayers, wounding Ayers in the torso.

"The subject kept going and drove off," Bankhead said. "And later he ran off the road. He was taken a local hospital, went into surgery and died an hour later."

The exact cause of Ayers' death is still unclear and will not be announced until after an autopsy.

If he was not doing anything wrong why did he flee?

So, if a man flees the police, he should be automatically executed by the police because this shows he was "doing something wrong"?If this is the typical mentality in GA, it's no wonder this happened.Grace, go lick the boots of your Gods, the police, who have the power to give life and take life.  If they think someone is doing something wrong, or not 'respecting' them enough, they should just kill that person on the spot, right?  That mentality is sickening.

Well genius. You are only surpassed in this category by Zoltan. If you had read either of what i posted above this you should be able to conclude the opposite of what you have derived.

Not only am I not from georgia i do not particularly care for the police. I simply based a question off of the information presented in the post. Funny how you want to stretch something off of a question that in no way dealt with the extrapolation.

This same thing happened to me when I was young, I picked up some youth at a church in New York City, we were driving in Queens and I took a wrong turn, so happened we u-turned in a drug house driveway, the police seing me white, and five black youth, figuared they were taking me for drugs, they came after us, jumped out of the car, did not identify themselves and had their guns blazzing, it scared the crap out of me and I hit the gas as a reaction. Thank God the youth in my car stepped over my foot and hit my brake. The Police pulled me out of the car, roughed me up, and screamed at me for running. I was just scared to death, didn't know who they were, and saw no badges. I would be dead today and was not guilty of anything but doing a good dead for a elderly lady in church rasing her grandchildren. These things do happen.

Why did he flee?  Let's think about the situation.  He was in his car, windows up, 2 guys are charging him with guns pointed in his direction and  he just got cash from an ATM.........wouldn't you flee?  Not to mention the fact that they pull up in unmarked vehicles in street clothes.  One eye witness said they were pounding/beating on his car! Between the noise outside and thoughts going on in his head, I doubt he had time to make sense anything.  The sherrif made the statement that 'Ayers was not the target' and that he had no prior record.  Basically, they didn't even know him!!  Aren't undercover cops supposed to have all this figured out - know thier targets, acting as 'clients' or 'buyers' or just another druggie?  My question is, why in the world would you pull a trigger on a face you've never seen before?  Shouldn't that have been a red flag for a cop to stop and reassess??!

Well considering i did not have any other info than what was posted it was a valid question. However, from what i have since heard of this outrage he did nothing wrong, and was justified in fleeing as most people would.

Grace, With the internet at your fingertips, there are multiple entries from many different sources about the incident. You have no right blurting out accusations without at least investigating on your own before hand. If you are as smart as you allege, then perhaps next time you discover all aspects before you make a conclusion.

0
Grace H

I made no conclusion...

I asked a question-- one that when answered would yield a conclusion.

0
Grace H

No I would not flee. Maybe its a city thing. But when a group of people roll up on you in a car and they have guns you do what they want in order to save our own life.

If a cop was to pull me out of the car and do anything to me which my own behaviour did not warrant there would be a problem. However, in accordance with what I have been taught and experienced I would keep my mouth shut and follow orders. Then later, I would call my father, who is a lawyer, and sue the hell out of the whole department.

If men were coming at you in normal clothes, jumping out of an unmarked car, pointing guns, wouldn't you try to get away????? Check out the video on WNEG 32 in Toccoa.

I knew Jonathan in highschool. This is so out into "left field". It does not add up.

THAY HAD ON STREET CLOTHES AND A GUN IN HIS FACE WITH THE WINDOW UP AND STERO GOING WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

These were undercover drug officers in plain clothes. I don't know if you've ever seen drug detectives, but a lot of them look like scumbags - it's part of their cover. They roll up on the pastor in an Escalade and run out of it with guns drawn. What would you do? He probably thought he was being robbed or carjacked. Before he died, he asked who had shot him, so he never knew they were cops. At best, this is an accident resulting from poorly trained officers who have no business carrying a badge.

Thank you.  I am so sick of all these people forming these opinions based on what they are reading from the news.  Those cops never identified themselves.  Jonathan was the best guy ever and he will be sorely missed.

He fled because he thought he was being robbed.  Those cops jumped out of an unmarked SUV, were wearing plain clothes and chasing him with guns drawn.  He had just withdrawn money from the ATM.  If that happened to me, I'd high tail it out of there too.  I know Jonathan Ayers and he would give the shirt off his back for anyone.  That's why he was such a good and caring Pastor.  Those cops never identified themselves, if they felt the need to shoot, they should've shot the tires out instead of killing an innocent man with a sweet wife with their unborn child.

God Knows the Truth

I was at Jonathan's funeral today. What a tremendous out-pouring of love and support from the community. What a testimony to a tremendous Man of God. The congregation was asked for anyone to stand up if they had given their life to the Lord Jesus Christ under Bro Jonathan's ministry. You should have seen the people who stood up! Old, young, black, white, all walks of life! Bro Jonathan truly loved people and had a passion to share the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ! Our prayers go out to his family and Church family. God knows the truth and He is in control. God bless! Let's hope Nancy Grace gets a hold of this!

Grace your an idiot, you think the war on drugs justified this. My stars women pull your head out of your ass!

1
Grace H

Pull your head out of your ass you shit for brains. I simply asked a question. I did not state my opinion on the ridiculous waste of time and money that is the war on drugs. As you assumed your the idiot. Asking aquestion is the path to knowledge, which you would know if you recieved any sort of education.

The way you structured the question in your comment...Grace. Read it out loud. Listen to yourself say it out loud. This is what they teach people w/learning disabilities. Write a paragraph, then read it out loud. They always say "wow, it sounds different in my mind". Read it out loud, Grace. C'mon. Read it out loud. Zoltan San Diego

Number one dumbass you have the learning disability as you apparently are not familiar with the code of conduct. I am graduating top of my class of about seven hundred and will most likely be attending an ivy next year so no i must disagree with you there.

How did they teach you to form a question, because last i checked that was the grammaticaly correct way to do it.

And as for the war on drugs. It was not even an idea until Bush Sr fabricated it. It is a waste of time and resouces. As far as marijuana is concerned it was made illegal originally at the behest of the cotton industry as hemp is a valid choice for fabric. Every other drug was decided upon based on illegal government testing conducted mainly by the CIA on various prisoners and members of the military. Well over two thirds of our over crowded jails are filled by people aught with drugs. People on drugs are responsible for less deaths and injuries than those under the influence of alcohol. You are more likely to get cancer from smoking tobacco than smoking weed. I can continue but I have better things to do than shoot shit with someone as imbecilic as you. So shut up. You are only further proving your own idiocy.

My husband and I knew Jonathan personally, and I would bet my life he would never be involved in anything like what people are insinuating. Jonathan was loved by a lot of people.....we were at the funeral home Thursday night and the line was all the way through the parking lot to the road, and people waited over 3+ hours to show there respect to him and his family. All I ask is if you do not know him please do not talk as if you knew what was going on. He was a GREAT person, and will be truely missed by a lot of people.

0
Grace H

Well I apologize then. I did not mean to insinuate anything. I do not pretend to have any awareness of this man, his work in the church, or the state of affairs in Georgia. I meant no offense by my question, but do to the lack thereof info in the article I fell prey to curiosity.

Being a pastor doesn't give you

1
No Nonsense

A guy is seen in the company of a drug/prostitution suspect. Agents attempt to question this guy and he flees and HITS AN AGENT WITH HIS WEAPON (aka car). The agents did identify themselves as bystanders confirmed. Guns were NOT initially drawn but were exposed or uncovered. Being a pastor does NOT give this guy the right to resist questioning and attack IDENTIFIED agents with his car. It would, however, give him more reason to run and attempt to protect his reputation. Could that not be the desperate actions of a man wanting to protect his reputation. Hmmm, does that not make sense??? Witnesses have confirmed the agents DID identify themselves so enough with slanderous attempt to cloud the situation.  It is very hard for families and friends to accept when "good" people do bad things. If that had been you or your kid hit by the guy fleeing from identified agents would that still be okay? Why would you put less value on the lives of the agents that are risking their life to protect yours????

Strange

So the cops were sudden if you watch the video and maybe he did think that they were thieves and got scared but....why would someone rob you in plain view of all the other customers who were there and in broad daylight? This doesn't make any sense, even the dumbest robber wouldn't do that. It seems like this pastor was probably trying to do a good deed and give that lady a ride not knowing her background. I can't say what I would have done, I don't think any of us could because its a panicked situation. I can tell you this if you give me the choice between giving someone my withdrawn ATM money and my life. I will choose my life every time. There was no reason for him to flee other than sudden reaction or fear. This is sad. This is the world we live in.

How was the officer's life in jeapardy in the first place?  He had his wheel cut away from where he was.  Besides that - he (the officer) was following him - not the Pastor going after him. When you put yourself in front of a driver - you assume the risk - especially if you're a unsubstantiated cop with a stupid gun in someone's face. Adrenilin kicks in and you don't know what you're going to do when a couple of guys who say that they're police officer but aren't acting like police officers have guns pointed at you for some unknown reason.  What is he supposed to do?This is murder, plain and simple. There was no violence initiated, at any time, by this Pastor - he only was trying to flee from something that made no sense to him. This is why officers should always be uniformed when making arrests.

i totaly agree that was murder, plain and simple, what was he suppose to? 9 out of 10 people would do the same thing,I just justice is served, but i really think it will all be covered up,certain things seem to disappear around stephens co. I myself shound"nt be writing this ,because i probadly be the target ,and theone doing the hiring of the trigger happy so called cops,

To all of those that knew him let me express my regret and sorrow for your loss. From what I have read about Johnathan he was a God loving amazing man. With that said. The young man was being a Christian and helping this woman (who has since vanished off the face of the earth or is being coached by the police to colaborate their story) like christians do. Dropped her off probably feeling good about doing a good deed. Stops by an ATM in what looks like a shady corner store to get money for tires for his wifes car (Side Note: You can swipe your card at 99% of all business establishments so he may have not even had to stop there) Then exits the store, is almost to his car when a THUGGY SUV slides in the parking lot in a THUGGY manner, Then 2 THUGGY looking brothers jump out waving guns, screaming, beating on his car. He did what anybody else in the world would do. He paniced and tried to remove himself from the situation. They started shooting at him sturck him and he sped off. When he was being attended to by the paramedics He ask "Who shot me" That statement lets you know that he didn't realize they were cops. I believe that he lived to speak to his wife and assured her that there was nothing shady going on but he had to go into surgery thinking that she maybe wasn't convinced. Then he died. To add insult to injury the police told the family at first he was killed in an nuto accident, then they were told he was shot by a drug dealer in a drug deal gone bad, then the third time the story was told he was implicated with being with a known hooker and drug dealer. I'd bring a Wrongful Death Suit against that town that would make Bernard Madoff's head swim. The police that shot him should be tried for murder. This young man was murdered plain and simple.

Truth Justice

Based on the facts if I were on the jury the two officers would be found guilty of manslaughter 1st degree. The facts are clear Ive put myself in both situations the man was fleeing for his life because he thought he was being robbed and the officers seen an opportunity to put a bullet in someone. If they were only man enough to say we made a bad mistake. This is the reason cops have the reputation they do but please dont catagorize all cops based on this one incident, my best freind of twenty years is a captain for the local sheriffs office and would never have shot a man that was just in fear for his life, he would have made it clear he was a real police officer and needed to talk about the young lady that he had picked up earlier.. May justice be served!!!
