Joran van der Sloot had confessed to murdering Natalee Holloway and dumping her body in a swamp during an interview with Netherlands' RTL-5, which was taped last year. However, authorities do not believe the Joran van der Sloot confession. Police got access to the interview before it aired, and stated that it does not match existing facts about the case. Natalee Holloway's body has still not been found.

Natalee Holloway was last seen during a high-school grad trip in Aruba in 2005. Despite false alarms, her body was never actually recovered. Joran van der Sloot was arrested early in the investigation, and subsequently released, then re-arrested in 2007.

"We tried to verify it," Blanken said. "It couldn't be true. We talked with several witnesses and reviewed several facts. The story is unbelievable and not true, in my opinion."
Joran van der Sloot has a history of lying about the case, though its unclear what he can gain from appearing to the world as a murderer of teenage girls.
Asked why van der Sloot gave the interview, Blanken said, "You should ask him. Maybe he wanted to be on camera or make some money."
