Justin Barrett Email: Boston Cop Calls Gates 'Jungle Monkey'
Boston police officer Justin Barrett has been suspended after sending a mass email referring to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. as a "jungle monkey."
Justin Barrett was placed on administrative leave pending a termination hearing yesterday afternoon. According to a supervisor, Barrett admitted to authoring the offending email. After the admission, Justin Barrett was immediately stripped of his gun and badge by Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis.
Barrett has also been suspended from his military duties due to the e-mail. A member of the National Guard, Justin Barrett sent the email to fellow National Guard members.
The email appears to be a letter of complaint written to a reporter at The Boston Globe. In the email, Barrett criticized Gates for talking on the phone while dealing with the arresting officer.
"His first priority of effort should be to get off the phone and comply with police, for if I was the officer he verbally assaulted like a banana-eating jungle monkey, I would have sprayed him in the face with OC deserving of his belligerent non-compliance."
