Karl Malden dies at age 97 - Family

Karl Malden, the star of The Streets of San Francisco has died at age 97. This has been announced by his family. Source FOX News. He is survived by his wife Mona Greenberg, which he married in 1938.

According to his manager Budd Ross, Karl Malden died in his sleep at 2:30 am. Ross said he did not know the cause of death, but that it could be a combination of things. H added he is 97 years old. (Source CNN.com)

The Gary, Indiana born actor, started his screen debut in 1940 with the movie ''They knew what he wanted" He was also in the movie "A Street Car Named Desire" in 1951.

Malden is probably best known for his role in The Streets of San Francisco as Lt Mike Stone, for which he won four consecutive Emmys.

In 2004 Malden received the Screen Actors Lifetime Achievement Award.

For all his movie roles, he probably received most recognition for his American Express commercials with the slogan "Don't leave Home without it."

Karl Malden was born Mladen George Sekolovic on March 22, 1912 in Gary, Indiana.. His family traced their routes back to the town of Bileca in Bosnia-Herzogovina. He anglicized his name at age 22 to Karl Malden. He switched the letters of his first name and used it as his last name. He used his uncles name for his first name.

Karl Malden published his autobiography in 1997 "When Do I start", which was co-written with his daughter Carla.

Karl Malden (March 22, 1912 – July 1, 2009[1][2]) was an Academy Award winning American actor. In a career that spanned over seven decades, he was featured in classic films such as A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront and One-Eyed Jacks, with Marlon Brando, and also Patton. Among other notable film roles are Archie Lee Meighan in Baby Doll and Zebulon Prescott in How the West Was Won. His best-known role was on television as Lt. Mike Stone on the 1970s crime drama, The Streets of San Francisco.

Loved him and his performances, from "A Streetcar Named Desire", where he played Blanche DuBois' original love interest before Marlon messed with it, to his work in "The Streets of San Francisco" and elsewhere.
