Five Dead after Hostage Standoff in Karlsruhe

After an armed man facing eviction barricaded himself in his flat, he and his four hostages are dead following a police raid. You can see video footage of the aftermath below.

A bailiff from the local district court and a locksmith had accompanied the apartment's owner and a prospective new tenant to the flat, located in Karlsruhe, Germany (see map below). The occupant refused to leave, taking all four as hostages and barricading himself into the flat. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots.

When smoke poured out of the top-floor flat, police special forces moved in, where they say they found five bodies. The prospective tenant, a woman was at first believed to be the gunman's wife or girlfriend.

It's not clear if the police ever made contact with the gunman before the smoke appeared.
