NP Rank:
Karuna Amman (former LTTE 2nd in command) appointed as Minister
Karuna Amman is a controversial character in Sri Lankan politics. After being with the LTTE for years, Karuna finally decided to break away from LTTE and fought against the LTTE, then formed a democratic party for Tamils TMVP.
While a lot of Sri Lankans believe that Karuna can be the means of a peaceful Sri Lanka, for forgetting the past and for taking steps towards building trust between Sinhalese and Tamils, there is a minor section who believe that Karuna should be tried for War Crimes. There is also another section who live outside of Sri Lanka who sympathize with the LTTE who consider Karuna as their sworn enemy.
MP Karuna appointed as Minister
Parliamentarian Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman took oaths as the Non-Cabinet Minister of National Integration and Reconciliation before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees, this evening.
Karuna Amman, a former top commander of the LTTE, was sworn in as the non-Cabinet Minister for National Integration and Reconciliation on Monday by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, shortly after he joined the ruling SLFP along with 2,000 supporters.
