Every few days the women strap their children to their back, pick up their machetes and work row by row to remove the strangling weeds that constantly threaten the cassava crops.

The major staple food in Liberia is rice – however up to 80 per cent of what is consumed is imported from China and Thailand. In the northern parts of the country, where transport costs make rice too expensive, cassava is now the most popular food.

“Liberians love cassava,” Yah Paye says. “It should feed all of Africa.”
