Kashmir, the Cause for a Potential Nuclear Holocaust
Kashmir is a beautiful valley lying in the lap of huge Himalayas. It shares its borders with at least three major countries including India on south, China on north and Pakistan on west.
Kashmir has been in the news for its political unrest. It has been a single major factor causing potentially dangerous military instability in the north-western belt of the Indian sub-continent. Kashmir has been the cause for at least three major wars, two between India and Pakistan and one between India and China. Currently the territory of Kashmir is split between India, Pakistan and China, but the major part is occupied by the Indian troops who also hold its capital city, Srinagar.
Historically, Kashmir has been a distinct territory. Ruled independently by the local rulers in the past it has its own unique culture, traditions, social and political structures that have always remained distinct from all of its neighboring countries due to its geographical isolation. As the mode of transportation for mankind became advanced the military invasion from air and ground became possible resulting in the colonization of Kashmir by its neighboring countries.
Kashmiri people have always hated to be under the rule of the foreign forces. After having declined the offer of accession from Pakistan they faced the military wrath from the Pakistani troops who invaded Kashmir after Kashmiris refused to be a part of their country. To hold the Pakistani forces Kashmiri leaders sought help from its other neighbor, India, least expecting that it would breach their trust too by holding their land in their illegal possession forever.
Currently, Kashmir is going through a tough phase. Basically, people of Kashmir are asking for their birth right, the right to self-determination and democracy. Kashmir’s resourcefulness such as its scenic beauty, rivers, lakes, orchards and much more has lured the eyes of both India and Pakistan and has plunged them in to shameless fighting ever since their existence as separate countries. Each is claiming their share on Kashmir. The multiple wars between India and Pakistan have severely affected the peace and prosperity of Kashmir. Indian troops are inhumanely torturing and brutally killing the innocent civilians on a daily basis. They are directed by their authorities to create and maintain an atmosphere of horror and terror in Kashmir so that the people of Kashmir, especially the youth, do not dare to ask for democracy and their right to self-determination. The pro-Pakistani militants would avenge the brutal treatment of the Indian troops on Kashmiri Muslims by killing innocent Kashmiri pundits who had to emigrate out of Kashmir leaving their homeland in desperation.
But now the people of Kashmir, including those living overseas, are willing to pay any price to end this half-century long brutal Indian occupation as well as the Pakistan-sponsored militancy.
The Kashmiri freedom movement recently got flared-up as Indian government attempted to ‘transfer’ a chunk of Kashmiri land to an Indian based organization meant to be used for the convenience of Indian Hindu pilgrims. Each year thousands of Indian Hindu pilgrims come to Kashmir to visit the Holy cave called ‘Amarnath’ situated in the heart of beautiful mountains in Kashmir. Most people think that Kashmiri people resented this transfer of land because of their hatred against the Hindu religion. However, this is not even close to the reality. Muslims who form the majority of Kashmir would have expressed same anger even if the recipients of the land had been Muslims of India. The resentment, therefore, was not against Hindu religion but against the breach of the promise that government of India had committed to the people of Kashmir at the time of the temporary military accession to India meant to hold the invading Pakistani forces. The ‘accession’ of Kashmir to India was conditional and one of the important conditions was to avoid any kind of sale, donation or transfer or lease of its land by the government, business or individual to anyone who did not have a Kashmiri origin. Recently, as the government donated Kashmiri land to the non-Kashmiri organization thereby violating its own constitution, the hue and cry from public was expected. Since centuries Muslims of Kashmir have been welcoming the Indian pilgrims. The Holy cave of Amarnath was in fact discovered by a Muslim shepherd named Buta Malik in 19th century. Ever since then Malik's generations have been the care-takers of the shrine and passing this legacy from generation to generation.
So far, India had been in complete denial deluding that Kashmir 'belongs' to them. But now as they see the strong Kashmiri public opinion turning against them day by day they are slowly coming out of their state of confusion.
The international community at this point has an important role to play. They must speak in favor of the people of Kashmir in allowing them to choose their destiny. A permanent solution to Kashmir problem is the need of the hour not only for people of Kashmir but also for the entire world as the countries involved in the deadly race of ‘owning’ Kashmir, have Nuclear capabilities. One more war, and the entire human civilization gets wiped off from earth! I therefore see Kashmir as the cause for a potential nuclear holocaust.
No doubt Kashmiri people have been known to be peace loving, but at the same time they are willing to fight for the sovereignty and integrity of their homeland. For these reasons today the common masses are coming out on the streets protesting against the inhuman treatment of the Indian Troops. They want to see an end to this turmoil. They are assured that peace and prosperity will only ensue by the withdrawal of Indian troops from their sacred land.
People of Kashmir have centuries’ long tradition of welcoming their visitors, guests and tourists from across the world. As soon as Indian troops will move out of the Kashmir peace will prevail and people of the world including India and Pakistan will get to see and enjoy the beauty of this paradise that has so remained suppressed and under-developed under the illegal occupation of India.
People of Kashmir want to end the brutal Military dictatorship of India and the International Community must second their cause and urge both India and Pakistan to keep their hands off Kashmir.
