Kelowna Ogopogo Rotary Club Hosts Adventure in Tourism
Ogopogo Rotary offers students an adventure in tourism
Kelowna, BC—Students from B.C. and around the world will be in Kelowna from March 29 to April 3 for the Second Annual Adventures in Tourism program, hosted by the Rotary Club of Kelowna–Ogopogo.
The Adventures in Tourism program is modeled on similar “Adventures in…” programs hosted by Rotary clubs in other parts of Canada, such as Adventures in Citizenship (Ottawa), Forestry (Prince George), Technology (Saskatoon), and others.
“Tourism is a huge part of the Okanagan economy, so it made sense that our club should host a program about the tourism industry,” said Jeff Stathopolous, president of the Ogopogo Rotary Club. “The program is good for the students, because they get a behind-the-scenes look at the tourism industry. And it’s good for Kelowna, because it exposes the Okanagan to a global audience of 1.2 million Rotarians and their families.”
“The objective of the program is to promote a greater level of understanding and appreciation for the value tourism represents to Canadian communities,” said Norm LeCavalier, chair of the Ogopogo club’s vocational services committee, and president of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce. “It also promotes insight into the vocational opportunities within the tourism industry and challenges participants’ notions of what tourism is and the role it plays in our communities.
This will be the second year the Adventures in Tourism program has been offered. Last year 21 students from across Canada and as far away as Scotland took part in the inaugural event. By all accounts, including this Adventures in Tourism YouTube video, it was a resounding success.
The agenda is fully supported by a number of leading tourism operators in the Okanagan. The students will be visiting these and many other operations over the five days they are here.
Other supporters include The City of Kelowna, Kelowna Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Kelowna, Okanagan College, Economic Development Commission, and the Osoyoos Indian Band.
