GOP Leader Kevin Garn Resigns after Confessing to Sitting Nude in Hot Tub with Young Cheryl Maher

Kevin Garn submitted his resignation on Saturday March 13 just two days after his confession of sitting nude in a hot tub with a then 15-year-old Cheryl Maher.

Even though the incident occurred 25 years ago, Garn's admission of sitting in the hot tub caused a stir in the media and he stated Saturday that he was stepping down for the best interests of his family, the people of Utah and his colleagues according to the San Jose Mercury News.

In an e-mail message to House Speaker David Clark, Garn apologized for becoming a distraction.

Garn also admitted that he paid Cheryl Maher $150,000 to not discuss the episode publicly in 2002 after he had initially offered her $20,000.

Kevin Garn said that while the incident in the hot tub 25 years ago was 'inapropriate' nothing happened with the young girl. However, Cheryl Mayer spoke out on Friday about the incident saying that 'let's just say, he really loves to massage.'

Maher was just 15 when this hot tub incident occured and Garn was 30.

It was uncertain when Garn confessed to the incident what his future in politics would be, and no one was sure if he would run for re-election. However, on Saturday Garn has now made his future in politics clear and thinks it would be better for all if he does not seek re-election.

Saw this coming after he confessed on the floor of the Utah Senate.  That whole blackmail thing will eat one up... 25 years of wondering when the ball will drop.
