Arturo Beltran Leyva, a Mexican drug cartel chief dubbed the "boss of bosses" has been shot down by Mexican officials.  200 Mexican sailors raided his upscale apartment complex and killed Arturo Leyva and 3 other cartel members in a 2 hour gunbattle.

In the battle the cartel gunmen threw grenades that injured 3 sailors.

Before the battle the sailors evacuated the building.

Arturo Leyva is the highest ranking cartel boss that has been caught under President Calderon.  Calderon has allocated over 45,000 troops in Mexico over the past 3 years.  In that same time roughly 14,000 people have been killed due to drug-related violence.

Arturo Levya was thought to have played a major role in American cocaine imports and is believed to have been very dangerous:

U.S. officials say the Beltran Leyva Cartel has carried out heinous killings, including numerous beheadings. The gang also has had great success in buying off public officials, police and others to protect their business and get tips on planned military raids.

Interesting that they used sailors, instead of army guys. Wasn't he once an officer?
