North Korea Prepares for Kim Jong-Il Successor Announcement: Kim Jong-Un

Kim Jong-Un, the youngest son of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il, was made a general in the North Korean army by a special congress of the Workers' Party. Kim Jong-Un (also spelled Kim Jong-Eun)is expected to be announced as the successor to North Korea's leadership. Little is known about the 28-year-old Kim Jong-Un, who has never held a real job. Indeed, confusion still exists over how to spell his name.

The last time the Workers Party held a congress was in 1980, after which Kim Jong Il emerged as the official heir to his father, Kim Il-Sung. Kim Jong-Il began a 14-year political apprenticeship, after which he assumed control of the reclusive nation.

Although Kim Jong Eun's name is never mentioned in the official press, North Koreans have been hearing about him for one year at mandatory ideological lectures conducted by the Workers' Party, according to North Koreans.
North Korea's state media has provided no information about the details of the congress which is the first major meeting of the ruling Workers Party congress for 30 years. North Korea's propaganda machine has promised the outcome of the event will be "historic".
