Kim Noble, Talented Artist with Multiple Personalities
Kim Noble, a talented artist suffering from a rare personality disorder called Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), dicovered that 12 of her inner characters produce different artwork with a diverse array of styles.
Noble, a 47-year-old single mother-of-one, began painting as a potential therapy to her DID, formerly known as multiple personality disorder. Over the years, she has been diagnosed as having schizophrenia, anorexia, and depression. It is not until 1995 when a psychotherapist finally correctly dianosed her condition as DID that she began receiving proper treatment. In 2005, Noble's carer now an art therapist, Debbie McCoy, suggested painting as a means to cope with DID, and her way proved to be extremely successful.
'Painting is a way that some of the personalities can come together so it has really helped me. It is something many of them have in common and a way for them to bond,
In the last four years, the 12 characters in Noble have painted over 200 paintings. Some of the personalities paint dark images, reflecting scenes from her childhood abuse, while other paint colorful images. Some prefer contemporary abstract images, and some prefer to sculpt.
"It can be very strange because I don't always remember what I have done when another personality has been in control. So it can be hard to explain which personality prefers doing what. But I think it's safe to say that they all have their own preferences and ways of expressing themselves."
The stunning work of Noble has earned her wide recognition in the art world. Many of her paintings have been shown in 27 exhibitions and galleries across Europe.
The documentary on Noble's amazing life is scheduled to be released in 2010.
