Kimberly Munley was washing her patrol car when the call came through that shooting had occured on the base and in her first interview since it happened, Munley said she ran to the scene where 13 people were dead and dozens more were wounded. She said that people were pointing around a corner where they thought the gunman was, so she rounded the corner and fired twice.

She said that she was hit by three bullets and said the first one felt like a muscle was being torn out of her leg. She has already had two operations, one for a severed artery. The 34-year-old mother of two said that she was doing well and taking each day slowly and individually.

"Every day is progress for me, and things are getting better day by day. And emotionally, I'm just hoping that the rest of the officers and the injured and the families of the deceased are healing as well."

Kimberly Munley had received training in this kind of attack, and was trained to fire first rather than wait for back-up.

Munley's partner Sergeant Mark Todd, 42, was also interviewd by Oprah today, and said this was the first time he had every used his weapon.

Major Malik Nadal Hasan is still in hospital and has yet to talk about the incident.
