A Natural Gas Explosion at a South Los Angeles Commercial Building Caused the Roof to Collapse Killing One Person Leaving Another Clinging to Life

One worker died in the building explosion, a second is clinging to life and a third may be missing amongst the rubble reports KTLA News. The Associated Press is reporting that a tampered gas line has been found at the scene of the explosion.

One worker was thought to have been killed when the force of the blast pinned him under a car but he is still clinging to life in hospital. One worker did die when he was wedged under a truck and electrocuted by a downed, live power line; he was pronouced dead at a nearby hospital.

The explosion took place at a welding business in the 900 block of E 59th Street on Friday morning (photo of the explosion). Rescue workers are worried there could be a second collapse.

At the time of the blast, the roof partially collapsed and three people were thrown in to the street, with some being wedged under parked cars reported NBC Los Angeles

Steve Ruda, the Fire Captain on scene, said that the natural gas explosion shook the surrounding buildings and about 100 firefighters responded to the call.

Daniel Ibarra, who works at the building, said he was taking out the trash when the blast hit. The 27-year-old man said he smelled some kind of gas. He appeared in shock as he leaned against a wall with a bruised leg surveying the damage.

"I was very lucky," said Ibarra, whose thick black hair was singed on top.
