La Guardia Airport in New York was in chaos this morning when Scott McGann, a man with a fake bomb approached an airline check in desk, with the device hidden in a bag and tried to board a flight; within 10 minutes the central terminal was closed and everyone was evacuated.

McGann was apparently intoxicated and became irrational when security noticed him and asked to see what was in his bag. The device in his bag turned out to be not dangerous, but he has been taken in to custody.

“The guy is collared and the bomb is not a bomb,” said John Kelly, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “I don’t know what he said. I don’t know what precipitated his arrest.”

However, his actions forced thousands of people outside on to the roadways creating a blockage of traffic and massive flight delays on one of the busiest travel days of the summer.

As the sun rose, streams of people spilled out of the airport and onto the nearby ramps for motorists. Limousine drivers were staying parked at the airport to pick up waiting passengers, creating a snarl of traffic around the airport that cascaded onto the Grand Central Parkway. Vans bringing flight crews were being delayed by the motorist traffic, setting off further flight delays.

La Guardia was already facing weather delays from Friday night.

Flights to La Guardia this morning were diverted, and many flights are now delayed at least 3 hours, so officials are warning you to check your flight before you leave home or call your airline for more information.

LGA returns to normal a few hours ago.   Some weekend travelers have opted to cancel their plans due to ongoing flight delays.

Crazy fool! Did he think he was being funny?

I don't understand these kind of people, like they can't find something useful to do with their time...
