Margaret Moran Former Labour MP in Court

Margaret Moran, the former Labour MP, repeatedly forged invoices so she could “pocket public money” to the tune of £53,000 in fraudulent expense claims, a court has heard.

The 57-year-old created bogus invoices for more than £5,000 of building work that was never done, claimed for telephones that did not exist, and “kitted out” homes she was not entitled to claim for.

Following The Daily Telegraph’s investigation into MPs’ expenses in 2009, Mrs Moran’s expense claims were investigated by police, resulting in 15 charges of false accounting and six charges of forgery.

The former MP for Luton South, who stood down at the 2010 election, is being tried in her absence at Southwark Crown Court in London after psychiatrists declared her unfit to plead because of the state of her mental health.....read more
