Lady Gaga to end up in a Russian prison for cause of gay rights?
A conservative talk show host whined about the fact that there is a lawsuit against a florist who denied business with a gay couple's wedding. A caller of his asked about a hypothetical case of a gay florist not providing flowers to an anti-gay group.
This is of course purely hypothetical because I know of no case of a gay business owner not doing business with a group of people who wish to deny that business owner the right and ability to marry the person that he or she loves. There might be such a case, but tolerance for different views seems to be one way street. Remember, no gays are trying to stop evangelical or fundamentalist Christians from marrying the people that they love.
If you are planning a trip to Russia, you better think again. The Russian government has stated it will arrest and fine gay couples who travel there and who hold hands. It even bans pro-gay rights stickers on luggage. In fact, if I wrote this column in Russia, I could very well end up in a Russian prison.
This is simply because the Russian government is dominated and controlled by the dictates of the extremely anti-gay Russian Orthodox Church. Imagine if Fred "God hates f.gs" had the ear of President Obama. Well, that is what it is like in Russia where the Russian Orthodox Church basically dictates to President Putin on social matters.
It is so bad that Lady Gaga, who in a concert in St. Petersburg, Russia, advocated for gay rights and so the Russian government is threatening to prosecute her, though there is no chance that the Obama adminstration will send her back to be prosecuted. A Santorum presidency, might have.
This is what happens when a fundamentalist religion comes to dominate a nation. It happens in nations like Uganda, where the right-wing Christian government threatens to execute gays and Saudi Arabia where gay men risk being lashed.
