Former British Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher is in hospital after breaking her arm.

Lady Thatcher was taken to west London's Chelsea and Westminster hospital by ambulance, but is now said to be "recovering well".

She will remain in their wards for the next 24 hours for observation.

The 83-year-oldtripped over at home this morning, snapping a bone in her upper arm.

Lady Thatcher was initially expected to be discharged today.

But a spokeswoman from her office told Sky News there was "nothing untoward" in keeping her in for a longer duration.

"Doctors at the hospital have decided, for everybody's peace of mind, that Lady Thatcher should stay in hospital for a further 24 hours," she said.

Margaret Thatcher, born in 1925, has been elected as the British Prime Minister three times from 1979 to 1990.

In 1990 she agreed to resign and was succeeded as party leader and the Prime Minister by John Major.

In 1992 she left the House of Commons for the House of Lords as Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven.
