Lahore college bans girls wearing jeans after extremists threat

One of the oldest and famous college of Lahore, Kinnaird College has banned girl students from wearing body -hugging western dress like jeans and T-shirts after threats from extremist elements.

The college has imposed a strict dress code that only allows students to wear Eastern dresses such as shalwar qameez or loose trousers. Dupatas have been made mandatory.

KC Vice Principal Nikhat Khan told our sources the measures were in line with a government notification, and had no connection with rumours about burqa-clad women issuing warnings to students.

She said jeans and tight dresses were banned on college premises since years but the new principal was unaware of the ban and girls were using this to their advantage.

Students reported an atmosphere of fear after the introduction of rules that barred students from wearing dresses of their choice.

Obviously, this is not a good thing to deprive anybody of his/her liberties. However, this has happened because of a handful of extremists but what about the societies where authorities/courts have deprived Muslim girls of their headscarves!

The question is not that if dress code is right or wrong - as Jordan said. The college is forced to ban certain because either an organization of illiterate terrorists or a gang of anti-social elements , who does not even know what is the meaning of education, did not like the way girls dress. Lahor is not a lawless city. Still the authorities let this happen.

It would have been a totally different issue if the college had taken the decision on their own.

Looks like the Vice Principal had to choose from two options. Either terrorists take away education or the principal takes away liberty - from girl students.

It is wise of her to choose the education especially since reports suggest that taliban terrorists are infiltrated major cities of Pakistan

In this case, the difference is that the change was made under the threat of violence. The real story isn't the jeans, but how powerful the supposedly-fringe element has become, and to what extent mass society is at its mercy.
