Lance Cpl Joshua Bernard AP Photo: Photo of Dying Marine

US marine Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard was wounded in Afghanistan, and died on the operating table. Associated Press photographer Julie Jacobson shot a photo of the dying soldier, and the AP released the image. The Department of Defense immediately protested the publication of the photo of the mortally wounded marine, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates personally contacted AP head Thomas Curley and asked him to reconsider. Several AP outlets showed Julie Jacobson's photo essay in its entirety, while some edited out the photo of the death of a Marine. Others opted not to show any of the photos. All of the online versions of the story I've found so far do not show the photo of the dying soldier.

At issue once again is the role of the media in wartime: the DoD obviously doesn't want images like this to go public: Gates sites the family's sensitivity, but the military element of the "war on terror" is noticeably light on photos of the human costs of war. Actually, that was the name of the editorial piece as published by the Wheeler Intelligencer in defense of publishing the work; Recognizing the Costs of War.

Another way of putting this would be that the media-military relationship would be described very differently by the media and by the military.

Lance Cpl. Joshua Bernard was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade during an Aug. 14 Taliban ambush in Afghanistan. He suffered severe leg wounds and died on a field hospital’s operating table, according to the Associated Press.

I think it should be shown because the american people live there lives out without even thinking about the lives that are lost on both sides.

I would agree. However, out of respect for the deceased and his family i can understand why the request was made and then honored.

You should all be ashamed of yourself in calling for the photo to be published.   Think if your loved ones were in a car accident or the victim of a heinous crime and the liberal media published it.  Absolutely disgusting and someone needs to stand up to these out of control left wing freaks.  I know that i will protect my children from the venom of these people and when they grow up, they will have the common decency to respect someone especially when a terrible event has occurred to them personally.  Shame on all of you who support the AP...........

4
RichT

You cowardly douchebag - leave it to a usless conservative to try to hide the effects of their wars and blame it on the liberals who tried to stop the slaughter. So typical to sit there and call liberals hateful and say we are full of venom - who the hell was killing people for 8 years in Iraq? Who was calling liberals un-American for valuing their soldiers more than conservatives who kept calling for more and more bodies to be added to the pile? No conservative ever had respect for anyone after a terrible event happened to them. No conservative has ever protected anybody after they were born. You are scum.

4
LATH

So "who" is killing now...it is not eight years ago...it is now. The only constant is the grunt in the field and he/she deserves our respect.

Dear never was. Bottom line! I saw two bumper stickers on the back of a pick up the other day. One a US Marine insignia the other read something like this. "We join the armed forces to defend and protect America. We go over seas, some of us are killed. We are called heroes! Then when we come home those on the left treat us like SHIT!" The media cost us the Viet Nam war and this is more of the same old crap Jane Fonda "Hanoi Jane" did I'm 65 and lived through it. No doubt you have been subjected to the lies of those who have rewritten our history. JFK was killed as pay back for betraying the Marines during the Bay of Pigs Invasion. The Marines take care of their own. Eisenhowers plan would have worked but Kenedy pulled the plug after the invasion had begun! Thats what happened no matter what you were told by your parisitic Profs. at Universites like Chicago U. knowen as "The Little Red School House" In the 60s. Parisitic because those like you live off the blood shed so that you can be so stupid but thes is America and you can be stupid and stay that way if you want to. I hold two degrees. A Bachelors- Summa Coum And a Masters Magna Coum. Hard to write now because of Spinal disease. I sincerely hope that there will come a day when those who have bee programed to hate morality and christianity look for the truth about our history. Some of my generation are hell bent to turb this country into a Comunist Anarchy and that can never be because Comunism and Markism are both lead by Dictators. The pigs always begin to walk upright and kill other pigs. NOTE: when you set out ot distroy a system you had better have a better system to replace it.

RichTYou vocabulary and response to the previous comment show a severe deficiency in language and reasoning skills.  I don't care if you are liberal or conservative.  I only hope that you allow people to make their comments and be respectful back.  If they family asked the AP to respectfully remove the photo then they should have respected the family's wishes.  Otherwise why show them the photo before hand???  Now the same liberals you support when shown the reports of the discovery of WMD's in Iraq by the conservatives after they cried about them for so long simply said, well so what that's not important anymore.  Be respectful and you will be respected.  Semper Fidelis and You are welcome for you freedom of speech.

Why SHOULD the AP pull this photograph? Why? This is news. This is reality. The family of this soldier don't have the right to demand that this photo be hidden anymore than they would have the right to have a mugshot of their family member hidden if he were exposed as a sex offender. That he was killed in Afghanistan is no excuse and for you to say so is puerile. Nothing was done wrong here...NOTHING. A photographer filmed a casualty of war and that picture was printed.....PERIOD. If the image disturbs you, and it should, then so be it. But war and violence is not a sweet business. Maybe you thought it was. Maybe you thought nobody gets hurt and if they do, they just put another coin into the video machine and play again. This kid is dead and he died violently and probably screaming. That's war and if you can't gather up the guts and accept that then don't be so quick to bomb the hell out of innocent people who never posed a single threat to you. There are a million little whimpering orphans in Iraq and Afghanistan tonight and you are sniffling about a photograph of a guy who volunteered to go there and more than likely killed a few of their parents AND got a paycheck doing so. The man is dead but why are you clamouring to kill the messenger who showed a photograph? That is the epitome of cowardice.

Cheers! And I'm really sick of people comparing it to a car accident; "we don't want to see grim photographs of car wrecks, blah blah blah." Ok, fine. That is true. War is not a car accident. War is a choice that we make to kill other people. Is it justified? That's a personal opinion. But whether it's justified or not, no body can argue that innocent people don't get killed in the mix. I definitely have a conscious. I feel extremely bad for the family that lost their son. I'm sorry that they had to see the photo or that it even had to happen at all. But what the Associated Press did was not wrong. Why should these photos be censored? It's the media's JOB to inform the public. Why is it OK for us to look at pictures of wounded, dead and dying people from other countries but not of their own? People are people. They are all dying. I think war is too censored. If we make the kind of decisions to go and kill people then we have to live with the consequences. We can't fluff it up and pretend it's not happening. The people over in Afghanistan can't hide behind a veil of protection. So you have to see an upsetting picture; at least your not getting blown up at your doorstep. The picture is meant to make you upset. To make you THINK! This is a bigger issue than one picture. It was meant to be a bigger issue. This happens everyday to thousands of people. It's 'funny' how when there is a picture of a U.S. citizen/ marine there is a huge uproar. Why should the U.S. have any more protection than any other person in the world. Get over yourselves.

What WMD´s ...there was NO WMD´s!!!!We all know that, it´s just the oil Bush admin. went to rob...............

Do your research: they have never found any evidence of WMD's in Iraq--period.

Cowardly? Douchebag? Useless Conservative? No Respect? Has Ever Protected Anybody? This conservative almost died protecting your right to sit behind a desk and computer and call me names while I was out protecting this country.  You're the coward, douchebag and have no respect.

2
MSGDAVE

With all due respect Gunny,  American's need to start seeing just what our brothers in arms are experiencing.  That means telling and showing the whole story.  War is about killing people and breaking things.  If you ignore that, then you are being a propaganda machine for the state.  I've been in too long to still think that these two wars are about 19 guys with box cutters.  Being a conservative means not towing the idiots line of these perepetual wars.  We signed up to defend the Constitution, not fight for the talking heads in Washington.

0
Ramon

not everyone in the service is conservative,  its terrible that we get down to namecalling in order to prove our point.  It is sad that this young man died, but I think the media should post these photos.  the civilians (now im one of them) dont even know that two wars are still going on.  the only reason why the press should think twice about publishing the photos is perhaps the families, not the military, specially not the politicians.  I think people should know the real cost of war.

Semper Fi Gunny!  Those left wing liberal idiots don't have a clue what is going on out there.  I hope and pray you never have to endore the pain and grief the this family or anyother family has gone through losing a loved one like this.  And by the way let me make this very clear as well...OUR WARRIORS DO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEM KEEPING YOUR **S SAFE BEHIND A DESK OR ALLOWING YOU THE FREEDOM TO RUN YOUR MOUTH they do however deserve the right to DEFEND THEMSELVES and their comrades at ALL COSTS.  Perhaps you should get off your video games and start paying attention to what is really going on.  I am also a Veteran and I also have a son currently serving.  OH yeah douchebag my other son was to leave the day we buried my nephew Joshua.  I hope the heck you never run into a Marine running off your mouth...they are a BAND OF BROTHERS>

Why you lousy arrogant piece of crap. Who the hell do you think you talking to, death in wars over the last hundred years has been the consequence of left wing policy and thought, you jerk. Hitler a National Socialist [left], the Soviet Union [left], all the Communist Nations [left], Woodrow Wilson dragging us into WW I [left], Kennedy and Johnson dragging us into <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Viet Nam [left]. FDR pulling us into WW II without a proper military at the beginning [left], Korea and Truman [left]. What is sad is that we have to tolerate clowns like you who know nothing about history, obviously your brainwashed asshole.

JimX.....Adolf Hitler and his corporatists were the epitome of extreme RIGHT wing doctrine, not left. The attempt by the Democratic (and consequently the Nixonian Republicans) American Party at invading and occuppying the Vietnamese Peninsula for corporate gain was hardly a "leftist" ploy. The Reagan attempt at occupying (and failing) Lebanon in the 1980's was also probably not well classed as a leftist mission. Nor was the Nicaragua massacre or the right-wing attempts at occupying Korea. The Munroe Doctrine and the slaughter of 680,000 Filipinos for corporate gain can't really be called American "socialism" either....nor can the either of the current disastrous right-wing blunders in Iraq and Afghanistan. Other than that....you're probably right....all other American combat botch-jobs were probably some kind of left wing mess like Wounded Knee and Little Big-Horn.

1
Monique R

Yeah sure, Hitler was so left that that he made a circle and showed up far right. National Socialism is as far right you can get, and Stalinism is state dictatorship and that has nothing to do with real socialism. Back on topic. Either you publish all war pictures of dying or dead people, or you ban all. Not just showing dead Iraqies and crying when one of your soldiers die. Ps excusez moi for the mistakes, since english is not my first language

USMCTHUNDERGOD

RichT... look at the verbiage on your comment. Who is full of hate and anger?  I say you, sir.  It is folks like you who are too cowardly and timid to protect and serve the Constitution and this great republic.  If you were under fire, I bet you would cower like a dog, wet your pants and curl up like a little child and hide and cry.  Yes, I just called you yellow. Again, look at your choice of words, words only an uneducated and sophomoric person would choose. Your vocabuluary and command of English is challenged and limited.  "Douchebag", huh?  And you dare sare conservatives are venomous. I laugh at you, sir. Go back and crall under the rock from where you came.  You, sir, are neither a gentleman, lack compassion as a human being, lack respect for opposing points of view and lack respect for those that are holding and walking the line for YOU! If this was a picture of a dismembered and dying reporter and some Marine had posted a picture of same, the AP would have gone ballastic.  Trust me, you DONT want to see the nasty horrors of war. Let those of us that fight and have fought these wars bear the burdens, physically and emotionally, so others, including you, dont have to see or experience same. Until you walk a step in any Marines shoes, I suggest and highly recommned you refrain from passing judgement or engage in hasty generalization.  I can assure you that when the chips are down, there is no finer group of folks around than the USMC to protect you. If you were in harms way, Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative, white, black, asian, hispanic, Jew, gentile, athiest or agnostic, all one need be is an AMERICAN and any Marine would protect you till death.  What say you, sir?  Would you do same? Or would you run away with your tail between your legs and go hide somewhere.  Man up and grow a pair Rich T. Yes, I was once with 2/3, to be specific Golf 2/3. The men and Marines with whom I served are a breed apart, second to none and, to this day, me dearest and closest friends. We are all brothers. Call us what you want, believe what you want and think what you want, we care not. Godspeed and Semper Fidelis Lance Cpl. Joshua Bernard.  You are not forgotton and never will be forgotten.

You RichT are a complete moran, you understand Obama aproved sending 17,000 more soldiers to afghanistan? So explain to us how exactly that "liberals" vaule life of a soldier more then a conservative? You sit here and vilify others for being pro conservative against liberals, yet here you sit doing the same only backwards. Heres a History fact for you, Democrats have more Military blood on there hands then Republicans. FDR (WW2) 400,000 dead us troops, JFK and Lyndon Johnson (Veitnam) 57,000 dead us troops. Now that as opposed to George H.W. Bush (Gulf War) 147 dead us troops, and George W. Bush (Iraq and Afghanistan) about 4500 dead us troops. So dont try and make it look like the Democrats are oh so great. And last ichecked the DEMOCRAT controlled congress is ruining this country and driving the national deficit sky high......so thanks alot you liberal nut

1
Walt Williams

Well, all I can say is the BOTH Conservatives AND Liberals had started wars -- some justified some not. Get real, just remember he who points fingers has three pointing back. Oh, by the way I am neither -- I am a very Proud American who would again fight to save your right to be ignorant. One question -- Who sent millions of U.S. Military men and women to fight in Europe during WWII?  Who and what was he?  We not only had thousands of servicemen die in Franch, Germany and Italy, but we bombed those countries and killed millions of men, women and children.  We didn't need to be in that war.  Now, who was the leader of this great nation?  Was he a Liberal or a Conservative?  and  who cares.  We had to go there and fight to save not only Europe but the U.S.   Just think about it.

As a retired military person I assure you that it is YOU that is scum.

MSgt Greg E.

How dare you post such a meaningless comment about a very serious subject. You don't deserve to live in our Country! This isn't about Republicans or Democrats, this is about the choice of a free young man that decided to join a cause that he truly believed in enough to sacrifice his life if necessary. You are probably at home living in your parents basement and writing inflamatory comments like the one you posted on this subject, because you will never have the courage to do anything to help this Country while you enjoy the freedoms we have and take for granted. The only scum in this post is YOU! He wasn't a conservative or a liberal, he was a son of America. Wake up you Obama Zombie!!!

I do agree the photo does not need be shown.  I have seen war and war is hell.  Think of the word hell and what picture does that bring to mind.  Good or bad.  Most likely bad so that is all the picture you need.  Feel free to read about it but leave the pictures of our soldiers out as they die out.  It is not needed.  There are better ways to report the war to america.  Look you want to know the face of death then sign on the dotted line and go yourself and I am sure you will find the answer you seek.

Lt Long, This photograph DOES need to be shown and published. Nobody is sneering or laughing at this dead soldier so the whole "respect for the family" nonsense doesn't cut any mustard. War is a serious and dirty business and if people are allowed to whoop and high-five each other as the F-16's are dumping bombs on cities, they should have the stomach to see what they are cheering for and what the effects are. This isn't a game and it isn't a movie. Why do the oil barons ban the photographs of coffins coming back from the combat. A coffin isn't exactly something that would make you cringe, is it? No.....but it's the deliberate hiding of war's consequences and making some crappy excuse like "respect for the families" or "sensitivity and privacy" is utter BS. When people see the effects of war and the unhappy outcomes then they aren't so easily swayed and blinded. As long as Joe Public doesn't see blood-splashed children, screaming mothers, legless soldiers or whimpering orphans then he won't stop and think and sympathise. I have no problem seeing horrible images. They depress me but I'm nott going to sue someone for publishing a picture of a load of skeletons at Auschwitz or bloated corpses in New Orleans. But the scum who want this war to go on under the covers don't want the public to see the horror of melted bodies or birth defects. The reason is obvious but the excuse is pathetic. So don't insult my intelligence by stating that certain images should be witheld to respect the family. I can pretty much guarantee you that this Bernard kid's family did NOT demand that this phot be pulled. The Pentagon did...because it doesn't help their war effort.

As far as I'm concerned, you hit the nail on the head. I could not have said it better.

Hey Picklehead or should I say butthead....I can GUARANTEE that this family did.  I was sitting right there.  BUT if the liberal photograhers want to show pictures then why not show pictures of the enemy splattered all over the field. WAKE UP.....CLUELESS PS JOSHUA was NOT a kid he was an OUTSTANDING MARINE and more of a man than you will ever be

Major David Pierce, United States Army

If this is true than you and those like you need to get in touch with reality.  The only reason you live your lives without knowing what is happening in the world (particularly the lives that are lost in war) is because you choose to go day to day ignorant and blind.  Read a paper, the internet etc.  The pain and sacrifice that the military and their families experience is there everyday.  You don't have to see it, you only have to think.  The release of the photo is typical of those few in the media who are looking to make additional money by reporting one of two things that are most popular today.  Blood and scandals.  You can undertsand the significance of war without displaying young American lives like a carnival side show.  Would you want your wounded son or daughters photo blasted across the media?

Grace H

The point of a photo essay is to what has been done with words in the past with a visual. A picture is more likely to make someone step back and say damn than an essay. However, yes the family should be respected and the photo not on the front page. But as part of an essay it should be published.

0
cdors

I have to agree. It is the family's right to tell AP to not publish this. The AP should be doing their REAL job and get the communists and czars out of our White House. And anyone who professes to know what goes on in war without having the guts (I will fess up, I don't) to be there to fight the same battle should either put up or shut up. These brave souls who put their lives on the line should be commended and they should be treated with love and dignity while they are there and when they come home. Van Jones needs to be sent to another country since he hates America so much. Him and the rest of his greeny weenies.
