Jefferson High School Student Lance Lundsten Reportedly Committed Suicide Over the Weekend, Which Friends Say Was Due to Bullying

Update: January 20:

There is conflicting reports about how Lance died, and the official cause of death has not been released at this time.

The preliminary findings in the autopsy of 18-year-old Lance Lundsten showed the teen did not die from an enlarged heart, according to Douglas County Medical Examiner Dr. Mark Spanbauer.

The teen's heart was slightly enlarged, but that finding was a secondary finding to an undetermined cause, according to Spanbauer.

Spanbauer said what actually caused Lundsten's heart to slightly swell was not yet known, as the final autopsy report was still in progress.

"He was a small young man.  His heart showed slight swelling," Spanbauer said.  "It was slightly enlarged.  This was a secondary finding."

Previous Story:

Lance Lundsten, 18, died on Saturday and news of his death was spreading on the Internet and via Facebook on Monday morning.

According to KSAX, Lundsten had revealed on Facebook that he was openly gay, and some students at Jefferson High School in Minnesota said he was bullied for his sexual orientation.

The Sheriff's Office has confirmed that they believe Lundsten's death to be a suicide, but they have not released any details about the medical emergency call that was made on Saturday.

“Bullying is a huge issue, particularly with the youth in our country now,” Facilitator of the Diversity Resource Action Alliance Shari Maloney said. “I think because we’re in central Minnesota, and we aren’t as diverse as some of the larger Metropolitan areas are, someone who is different maybe draws more attention and it’s not always positive.”

Lundsten's funeral will be held Tuesday at 7:30pm at Anderson Funeral home in Alexandria.

Excuse me, but I am a senior at Jefferson High School. I knew Lance Lundsten. He did not commit suicide. Nor was he bullied for his sexuality. The media screwed up and I hope everyone stops talking about this. HE WAS NOT OPENLY GAY! He diclosed that information in his private facebook account. This has got to stop. Please send an apology to his family, or to our local newspaper for wrongly stating your opinions.

Just so you know when someone puts something on their "private" facebook account it is not exactly private.

Also, read the article referenced as it was written by local media. The opinions presented are not the authors. They are statements of fact. This is hard news. Theres no opinion or human interest presentation herein. It is objective reporting.
