Middle school shooting-shooting at a teacher -May 18, 2009

Larose-Cut Off Middle School in the Lafourche Parish of Louisiana was the site of another US school shooting May 18, 2009 when a student opened fire on a teacher.  The teacher was not hit but the student suffered a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.  The student is in hospital and Larose-Cut Off Middle School remains on lock down while police investigate events.

Larose-Cut Off Middle School is located in the Lafourche Parish, Louisiana town of Cut-Off and hosts students in grades 6 through 8 (normally ages 11-14).  The unidentified student, a male aged 15, is in critical condition from his suicide attempt.

The unidentified student fired one errant shot at his teacher, then left the area and shot himself in the head in a restroom, Sgt. Lesley Hill-Peters said. The student was brought to Lady of the Sea Hospital in Galliano, where he is in critical condition.

No other students were injured during the shooting. The teacher, whose identity has not yet been released, was not injured

Students are being brought to the nearby VFW Hall. Parents are asked to call 693-8600 to arrange picking their child up at the hall. Students will not be released to their parents until all students have been accounted for.

Details continue to emerge as investigators seek to understand what motivated the still unnamed Larose-Cut Off Middle School shooter to fire upon his teacher and then shoot himself in the head. A journal found in the shooters backpack offers some clues.

The Larose-Cut Off School shooter's journal entries are full of anger and contain a detailed description of his planned assault on the Middle School.  If the journal is to be taken at face value it appears that Larose-Cut Off Middle School narrowly avoided becoming the next Columbine.

The shooter aimed at his teacher but ended up shooting a blackboard instead.  Students in the small town school immediately recognized him and his own cousin was even in the class.  The shooter was not known to be a trouble maker and his assault on a teacher and subsequent attempted suicide has caught everybody off guard.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said a backpack found at the scene contained a journal that included writings about how he was going to kill people and a diagram of the area he was planning to occupy.

The student wrote in the journal that he planned to go to art class and then excuse himself to go to the bathroom, where he would “gear up” before heading to the back of the main building and into the first classroom to begin his attack.

At the end of the note, Webre said the student wrote, “I am King. F--- you all. All will die...”

The gunman was dressed in an AC/DC Highway to Hell T-shirt and, despite the elaborate plans in the journal, was armed only with a lone gun and four bullets, two of which were used in the school.

Also in the journal was a drawing of the gunman in camouflage pants, which he apparently changed into before going into the classroom.

I used to live in Lafourche Parish, and it's a shock to find out something like this happened in such a peaceful town. I do hope that no one will be crazy, let alone stupid,  enough to redo this stunt in any form.
