Laurent Gbagbo Captured in Ivory Coast
Allasane Ouattara's Forces Arrest Laurent Gbagbo
After a drawn-out siege, one of Ivory Coast's two presidents has been arrested. French forces attacked the presidential residence, where Laurent Gbagbo was hiding in a bunker. Gbagbo was arrested by forces loyal to the internationally-recognized president, Allasane Ouattara.
Previously, Laurent Gbagbo's generals had been negotiating his surrender, but Gbagbo's forces were still fighting Ouattara's supporters in Abidjan.
It's not clear if violence between the two groups will cease: there is an extent to which Laurent Gbagbo was not even in control of his own forces, and the same could be said for Allasane Ouattara.
The capture came after French helicopters, acting at the request of the United Nations, unleashed heavy overnight attacks on a bunker at the presidential residence where Gbagbo was holed up.
