Layton accuses Harper of being "hostile" toward women
NDP leader Jack Layton accused Prime Minsiter Harper of habouring a "hostility" toward women's issues while campaigning in Gatineau Quebec on Sunday.
Citing the Conservative Party's funding cutbacks in gender equality initiatives, and blatant lack of women in cabinet as proof of the government's "disastrous" record in promoting gender equality, Layton vowed to change the federal mandate of the status of women should the NDP come into power.
Campaigning in Gatineau, Que., across the river from Ottawa, Layton pledged to restore $5 million in cuts made by the Conservative government to programs supporting gender equality, and invest an additional $120 million per year to address the issue.
Layton said that Harper has few women in his cabinet and has left a "disastrous" record on women's issues.
"Mr. Harper is so reluctant to promote equality for women that he changed the mandate of the (federal) status of women organization to say that they specifically had to remove the pursuit of equality from their mandate," Layton told reporters. "I would call that being pretty hostile to the idea."
