It's again bad news from India. more than 100 Hindu devotees are feared killed and over 200 injured in a stampede in Nainadevi temple in mountain state of Himachal Pradesh. The incident took place in the famous Hindu templ of Naina Devi situated on a mountain.in Bilaspur district. Latest report from an Indian TV channel sugest that among the dead are 30 children.

The stampede reportedly occurred at around 10:45 am after rumours of a landslide in the area spread. Others said the stampede began after a railing outside the temple collapsed.

According to the Bilaspur police, at least 30 children are among those killed in the stampede, while many of the other dead include women.

Relief operations are underway at the site of the incident and the injured have been rushed to various hospitals in nearby towns. Teams of doctors are also being sent to the site from nearby areas.

The devotees had gathered at the temple, which is located at a hill-top 160 km from Shimla, in huge numbers to attend the 10-day Sharavan Navratras fair that began on Saturday. As it was Sunday, the number of devotees present there had reportedly risen to nearly 50,000.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of the dead, while those critically injured will get Rs 50,000 and those with minor injuries will receive Rs 25,000 each.

Sanjay Jha, zeenews reports that authorities have recovered 90 bodies so far. Differing accounts still exist as to the cause of the stampede -- a railing broke or a landslide in the area -- CMP Kumar Dhumal has announced a compensation to the kin of the dead and the government has ordered a magistral inquiry. Sanjay Jha, I like this story. It's good stuff. Certainly tragic, when places of worship cannot offer safe haven

I just saw on Wikipedia all the information already, which says there - a railing collapsed causing a great number of devotees to die when they all fell off the cliff.

The crowd became disorganized and unmanageable as the railing on the way to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple gave way, a terrible stampede resulted. The current death toll is put at 130.

Indeed, the toll is hovering at 145:

Witnesses and authorities had varying accounts of what caused the morning stampede at the Naina Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh state.

Deputy Police Commissioner C.P. Verma said the stampede, which began about 10 a.m., was caused by rumors of fighting near the temple.

The rumors led to "a rush of the public in a very small place," he said.

But witnesses said the initial stampede was caused by a railing in the temple that appeared to break, causing panicked worshippers to flee.

I have been to this temple many times.
The total diameter in actual shrine is very less ,this is the reason these huge barricades are mounted.
But I believe accident happened at the path which leads to main door of temple.

Whatever happened was very sad.The only temple where I found something organized is Mata Vaishnu Devi temple in J & K
