Bombing attacks in the Iraqi cities of Baghdad and Kirkuk killed at least 23 people early Thursday morning , including three US soldiers. The attacks come only a day after about 40 people were killed in a car bomb in north-western Baghdad.

Twelve people, including the US soldiers, died when a suicide bomber attacked a market in Baghdad's Dora district. Two other bombs went off near Sunni militia in Kirkuk and a Baghdad police station.

Both the Iraqi government and the US say recent attacks are isolated incidents that do not undermine security gains. They say the attacks are not as sophisticated as they once were.

April was the bloodiest month in Iraq this year, with a 40% rise in the number of people killed over March - but the toll for May had been lower.
