Three people were stabbed in a creche in Sint-Gilles-bij-Dendermonde in Belgium, in the province of East-Flanders. Among them two young babies. Another 10 people got injured, among them 8 young children.

The killer has been arrested, but no motivation was given. Police helicopters and officers on the ground searched for the assailant, who was caught and arrested while fleeing on a bicycle, reports SKYNEWS.

He had visited centres for the disabled earlier in the day, according to local reports. It is now confirmed that he is a patient in a psychiatric institution.

Around 10 a.m. the man arrived at the day-care centre, where he got in with the excuse of having 'a question'. He entered a room with young babies, aged 0 to 3 years, and there he started stabbing around. Staff-members tried to stop him, but he attacked them as well. In total, ten persons were injured, three were killed.

"All the injured are being looked after, those not injured have been taken to a special care centre," said Piet Buys, the town's mayor.

"They are in shock and need psychological support. We're not sure who the perpetrator is but witnesses say he just went wild," he said.

The news that a third child had passed away, was incorrect, according to a spokesman of the hospital in Dendermonde, AZ Sint-Blasius.

Who cares who posted it first, as a parent I'm sad for the loss of these children, I posted that first if it matters

It's so scary that you drop your kids off in a place where you want to rest easy that they are safe and well taken care of and then some monster comes and shatters sense of safety.

Thanks for this news.  How sad for these families!  Security in daycare centers and schools is serious business.  I admire the security of one daycare center and school in my area, with its attended lobby to which the outer doors are locked during the day after school intake time.  Admission to the classroom and nursery areas require logging onto a computer with a special code given to parents, or by showing valid I.D. and verification that the visitor has been cleared for admission by the school administration or by parents, if picking up a child.

In a society that usually waits until mentally challenged citizens actully prove themselves to be a danger to self and others before qualifying for  involuntary hospitalization or enforced treatment as outpatients, more tragedies like this will occur.

A third child has died from stab wounds.

Of the 10 children taken to hospital, one has since died, Bart Van Doorne, editor of De Morgen newspaper in Brussels said Friday

"One of the little children died half-an-hour ago from wounds of the attack," Doorne told CTV Newsnet around 10:30 a.m. ET from Brussels.

So what's the deal here?

"They are in shock and need psychological support. We're not sure who the perpetrator is but witnesses say he just went wild,"...

I greatly sympathize with these families.  What a terrible, terrible loss!

I had my own son (11 - 18 mos old at the time) in a creche outside of Liege while we lived in Belgium.  At the time, I was happy that excess security was not considered necessary at the daycare - simply, sign in and out daily.  It made me feel as though the daily environment and country of Belgium itself was so much safer than what I was accustomed to. (We're from Los Angeles, Calif.) Here in the L.A. area,  my son's daycare has an electronic thumb scanner at the front door, which requires a person's thumbprint to even have access to the lobby and front desk area.  It's so sad that horrible crimes are trickling throughout the world, and not just prevalent to the large cities any longer.

What a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to these families.

This is just awful - I can't even imagine how terrifying this must have been, and those poor children. It's just so sad.

sad ? terrifying ?

it is much more than that! It is a human tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to these families, too.

In my eyes the attacher deserve the death sentence, because he is and he will be a menace.

My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families for all involved.  I hope they know that they're being supported by parents throughout the world.  God bless them all.

where this happened is in a side street of the street i live in. i just don't know what to say, every person's face in town is struck with grief. media & reporters swarm around which gives me a double feeling. i visited the creche today, 200m walk from my door. It's unreal. All of these emotions seem to flow through the air, very tangible. :'(
