Join the Impact, the latest national LGBT organization, which sprung up after Proposition 8 succeeded in California, is working on a campaign to take place next Saturday. Organizers across the country are going to try to secure 1 million signatures to send to President Obama requesting he appeal the Defense of Marriage Act. DOMA is a federal law that was passed in 1996 and was signed by Bill Clinton, The law works similarly as state medicinal marijuana laws where Federal law doesn't recognize gay marriage even if the states legalize it. DOMA also includes a clause that says that states do not have to recognize same sex marriages. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_of_Marriage_Act

According to the JTI website DOMA set the precident for Prop 8 which many members refer to as prop hate. The Open Letter to Obama is a response to an open letter to the LGBT community which was released by his campaign while running for office. Obama also stated he supports the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell," legislation.

Quote

"I support the complete repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) – a position I have held since before arriving in the U.S. Senate. While some say we should repeal only part of the law, I believe we should get rid of that statute altogether. Federal law should not discriminate in any way against gay and lesbian couples, which is precisely what DOMA does,"
Barack Obama

JTI is reporting that the original author of DOMA, Bob Barr, recently wrote an op-ed to the L.A. Times agreeing with Obama that the act should be overturned. Source: http://jointheimpact.com/2009/01/breaking-news-author-of-doma-asks-for-repeal/

In the article Barr says "Even more so now than in 1996, I believe we need to reduce federal power over the lives of the citizenry and over the prerogatives of the states. It truly is time to get the federal government out of the marriage business. In law and policy, such decisions should be left to the people themselves." Meanwhile as pollsters vote at Change.org, in the final round (related story:http://www.change.org/ideas/view/pass_marriage_equality_rights_for_lgbt_couples_nationwide ), Repeal DOMA is on the list, but the following has made it to the top 10 at number 5:

Pass Marriage Equality Rights for LGBT Couples Nationwide:

All men and women should be allowed equal rights when it comes to civil marriage no matter the sexual orientation. This is the ultimate civil rights battle of our time. We need to make sure that our friends, brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers are able to enjoy the benefits of a civil marriage. We don't want to compromise equality for any reason – gender, sexuality or otherwise. Let's let put the ultimate act of love into law.  Source: http://www.change.org/ideas/view/pass_marriage_equality_rights_for_lgbt_couples_nationwide
