Libya's Moammar Gadhafi calls for holy war against Switzerland
Col. Moammar Gadhafi of Libya called for a "holy war" against Switzerland on Thursday in the latest round of his two year diplomatic struggle with the Swiss government.
The breakdown in diplomatic relations began in 2008 when Geneva police arrested Gadhafi's son and wife on charges of beating up their servants. As a result of the arrest, Libya recalled its diplomats from Switzerland, and removed its money from Swiss banks. It also interrupted oil shipments and prevented two Swiss businessmen from leaving Libya.
The latest diplomatic bout stems from the Swiss governments recent referendum to ban the construction of new mosque minarets throughout Switzerland. Gadhafi has retaliated by calling for Muslims throughout the world to boycott Swiss products along with a ban on Swiss planes and ships from entering the airports and seaports of Muslim nations.
On Feb. 15, Libya banned citizens from 25 European countries from visiting Libya as a result of the travel restrictions which the Swiss government placed on Gadhafi, his family and his ministers.
The Swiss government has declined to comment on Gadhafi's call for a "holy war" and has given no indication of a heightened security alert, however Swiss nationalist lawmaker Oskar Freysinger said. "You never know with crazies . . . "I can imagine that this won't be taken very seriously. But nevertheless, it's the head of a state making a declaration of war against Switzerland."
Swiss foreign and defense officials refused to say anything, apparently trying to avoid giving weight to Col. Gadhafi's threat. Federal police spokesman Stefan Kunfermann said authorities were monitoring the situation but haven't added new security measures yet.
"The government should say absolutely nothing about this absurd provocation," said Mr. Ziegler, a former Swiss parliamentarian.
Others disagreed. Mr. Freysinger, a member of Switzerland's biggest political party, said the country should at least appeal to the U.N. Security Council to condemn Col. Gadhafi's speech.
"This man has declared war on Switzerland. If Hitler had done the same, everybody would have protested. But with this guy, we just accept it," Mr. Freysinger said.

Hugh: You know sometimes I worry about posting a story such as this. You never know, someone might take offense and shoot an RNG into my garage . . . .

From what I gather, the Swiss government isn't taking Gadhafi's call to Jihad seriously. I don't think he's too well liked in the Muslim world. But then again you never know. There are certainly enough terrorists and fanatics in the Muslim world and I'm sure that many of them are always froggy and ready to jump in response to the rantings of any lunatic. A lot of guns in Switzerland though. Almost as many as there are in Florida.

Perhaps, but in Switzerland, the liberals are forced to own a gun! Forced i say! How fun is that?

Roy: Did you mean to say that they are in favor of banning the burka?

"There are certainly enough terrorists and fanatics in the Muslim world and I'm sure that many of them are always froggy and ready to jump in response to the rantings of any lunatic."Wow. That was a very efficient, two-, nay, one-dimensional analysis of terrorists. I suppose I say the same about Americans. And to think those froggy crazies call your countrymen terrorists. Oh the nerve of them! And to save time I would love it if you didn't simplify my retort into sympathy of terrorism. And yes, Europeans are not clearly in support of banning burkas. Read the polls - the lawmakers do not always speak for the majority; just because it becomes banned does not mean that is what everybody wants.

Oh yes! Many Americans strap suicide bomb packs on and blow themselves up along with innocent people every day. No different from the terrorists in the Muslim world. Thank you for pointing out that fact.
If you want to defend terrorists, go ahead. But the problem with that is that an attitude like yours gets innocent people killed. In other words, you're complicit in terrorist activity. Why have so many Muslims flocked to Europe instead of remaining in the country of their birth by the way?

The commute is shorter if they live in Europe?

Hugh: I imagine that you're on to something there. Also the Europeans are more "progressive and tolerant" than we here in America are. As you know, America is a terrorist nation filled with racist/xenophobic/homophobic/Christian religious fanatics that strap on suicide bomb packs every day of the week and blow themselves up along with innocent men, women, and children in the name of Jesus Christ.

Send in Condaleeza Rice to talk some sense into him.

of course I keep forgetting the only form of terrorism is suicide bombs. how stupid of me. thank sweet lord jesus not one american has ever taken another life in his name. my oh my, i do feel stupid now! and if you want to simplify my 'defense' of terrorism to an act of complicity, that is fine with me. I would rather at least take the time to try to understand an enemy (and yes, terrorism and terrorists are an enemy) rather than just chalk up them up as nutjobs. have you even looked at a webpage of a muslim fighter, terrorist or not? i would agree with you there are defnitely some crazy manifestos out there. but what about a man who lost his three daughters and wife in a roadside bomb dropped by an american bomber? would you say that is a man you would rather chalk up as crazy, or maybe someone who shouldn't be treated with a bullet but rather some therapy, maybe even an apology? fighting someone and villifying them is not the only answer. sometimes yes, absolutely, but not always. i know this is a stupid question before i ask it, but just try to imagine yourself in that situation. would you be angry? perhaps even delirious? again i will ask you to not simplify my comment down to a sympathy call for terrorism. i would agree that killing civilians is barbaric and an atrocity. im just saying the terrorists arent the only ones doing it. and i'm sure you can justify the times when 'our side' does it. i just think so could they.

He was calling for an economic boycott of switzerland, not a military war. He mentioned nothing of a military situation. The Swiss import 30% of their oil from Libya.
