Lie Or Opinion? There Is A Big Difference!

So yesterday I was treated to yet another left wing whine about the lies of the right by a liberal blogger on another site I write for.  Here is the meat of it:

"First you have their mouthpieces simply flat out lying in order to scare people off of Barack Obama and all things Democrat. Death panels, communist agendas, references to Hitler, accusations of the indoctrination of schoolchildren and even frog boiling are all being hurled at the millions who listen to or watch these folks on a daily basis. No lie is to big because one of them simply tells it and all the others swear by it, presto, Obama is trying to kill your grandmother. It's a fact. Believe it or risk seeing gramma die a slow and agonizing death at the hands of Barack Obama."

Let's take a look at these "lies" and examine why they are OPINIONS that are formed based on facts.

First, death panels.  Our OPINION is the "death panels" come from two facts.  One is the "end of life counseling" that the government will be facilitating and the other is the inevitable cuts in funding care that will likely result in some people being denied life saving care that they would have gotten before "reform".  Our OPINION of the existence of death panels comes from the FACT of end of life counseling and cuts in funding that will ration care.

Second, communist agendas.  First of all, wrong word.  His agenda is fascist, not communist and we have never said otherwise.  When we look at history, particularly the history of post WWI and pre WWII Germany, we see similarities that are unmistakable and undeniable.  It's almost like we are following thier blueprint.  Interestingly enough, it was economic disaster and the need to recover from it that fueled the fascist fire.  The people of Germany were looking to the government for help and answers and Hitler grasped right onto that and capitalized on it.  It is our OPINION that Obama is doing the same.  This writer fears he will use martial law if he feels he is losing power.  That is my OPINION.

Third, the accusation of the indoctrination of school children.  Again, this is an OPINION and one that is not exclusively on the right.  Many on the left are as shocked as we are.  More than one tape has now surfaced and based on what the children were taught to sing and the lyrics of the song it is our OPINION that the performance was a form of indoctrination from a teacher that was probably well meaning but definitely out of line.

By the way, in my OPINION, the indoctrination of children toward liberal ideals is hardly anything new.  It is why I home school my kids.  I don't want them being taught about "My Two Mommies" or that Evolution is a fact rather than a weak hypothesis.  Am I indoctrinating my kids?  Damn right I am.  That's my job, not the governments.

I can't comment on the frog boiling, I missed that, but I think you get my point.  Their is a big difference between a lie and an opinion.  Unless we get that right, debate is meaningless.

You are of coure entitled to whatever opinion you want. I agree. Your children will one day be exposed to homosexuality, and learn that some in society don't think it a cause of moral censure.

Your children will on entering the broader world be exposed to the works of Darwin and the a fairly wide circle of scientific experience that supports him.

They will of course by then, to use your own phrase, have been indoctrinated by your own world view.

They may yet, as children of the modern age are want to do, surprise you by having a set of opinions of their own..which may or may not coincide with your own.

If they end up being biological scientists or gay, you may have a whole new paradigm to process.

That is beauty of a free society.

Please don't get me into a debate on Evolution.  I am incredibly passionate about that we will be here for weeks.  I have so much to debunk the "scientific proof" it's ridiculous. :)

Thanks for the comment.

As you said, it is all a matter of opinion...actually, the brightest and most educated man I know, and a well respected scientist, published and of academic renown in his field (botany) opposes evolution on religious and evidential grounds and mounts a vigorous and rigorous case for opposition. I argue with him about it. I have to respect, but disagree, with his conclusions. I think what I am trying to communicate is that regardless of how you try to control the outcome, any indvidual (and especially kids) reach their own conclusions eventually and it may not agree with the parent. That's OK. I am not a fan of home schooling personally for a whole host of reasons (disclosure - I am in education and the commercialization of same), but if that is your choice I accept it, but caution, from my experience it may not affect the eventual outcome

Home schooling in my district is actually supervised by the district itself.  My wife is a certified teacher in Elementary Education and Secondary Math which helps.  I agree with you that my kids will find their own way and I encourage them to.  I will support them in whatever they decide.  I may not agree with them but I will love them regardless.

Can you share with me the name of your friend and/or point me to some of his work?  Creation Science is a bit of a passion of mine but I am not a Young Earth Creationist which puts me at odds with some of my colleagues.

I will pm you his name. I do not have his permission to share his name publicly  and he is well known in his specialty. He is, however, a friggin (and that's a technical term :)) genius. As a quick aside I am, I think, a fairly talented linguist. He has fluency in 14 languages..he is a challenge but I love him dearly. He is late 60's now, double bypass and if you can keep up with him still - good luck!

If you love your kids and tell/show them that regardless of your world view all will be good

Opinion, Spin or whatever government officials may use, don't believe the messenger because 99% chance he is telling you a lie. They make sure that their own buddies remain in the high places and any well thinking capable professional is thrown out like Paul Volcker who originally was appointed as adviser to Mr. Obama. But Paul told the truth and that was not acceptable for the crooks. Government is lying to you, and be careful that they are not hurting you!
