Lies about same sex marriage and cross on a football helmet
In a month, state of Washington voters will approve marriage equality for gays and lesbians in that state. Well, Catholic Bishop Joseph Tyson wrote a statement urging Washington Catholics to remember to take marching orders from the Catholic Church. Bishop Tyson wrote about marriage equality passing in Washington ,"it will become legally discriminatory for public and private institutions such as schools to promote the unique meaning of marriage.
This is a lie. A complete lie. All bans on interracial marriages were removed in 1967, nothing stops churches and religious schools from opposing those kind of marriages. If the Catholic church wants to advocate for opposing gay rights by quoting the bible/religion, they will have the perfect right to do so. Please Bishop Tyson, stop the lieing.
Oh, by the way. In Canada they have paid prison chaplains. Well, now they will only have Christian paid prison chaplains. Yep, only Christians. See, the government has said that prison chaplains are too expensive, so instead of cutting some Christian chaplains also, they cut all Wiccans, Jewish and Muslim chaplains.
The Canadian governmental ministry involved stated: "However, (it) is not in the business of picking and choosing which religions will be given preferential status through government funding." Really? You just picked and chose Christianity over all other religions. Prisoners of other religions have to rely on volunteer chaplains, so why not Christian chaplains?
Lastly, closer to home in Milwaukee, Shorewood High School and Messmer High School have had a combined football team. The former is a public school, the latter is a Catholic school. Well, a new logo had a cross on their helmets. When pointed out that this shouldn't be the case, an immediate change happened. Since this isn't the Bible Belt, there didn't have to be endless fighting in getting them to change to a non-religious logo.
Now, of course the religious right-wing is up in arms, but if Dearborn, MI, which has a large Muslim population, had a public school or public/private combo school with an Islamic crescent would the religious right-wing defend it? No of course not, in fact, the school adminstrators (and maybe players) would be getting death threats right now.
