Life at 'Gammel Strand' (The old Banks [beach]) COPENHAGEN by The One Wonderer PathFinder

'Gammel Strand' COPENHAGEN - a city, alive !

1) Townhall Tower in the background.

2) Statue at Gammel Strand; Svend Wiig Hansen 'Sculpture 'Generation Raises Generation'.

3) At Gammel Strand can be seen a statue of an old fishwife (fiskerkone - skovserkone) from Skovshoved. The statue was erected on November 12, 1940 and was sculpted by Christian Svejstrup Madsen.

Gammel Strand was originally the site of Copenhagen fish market, and central to the commerce of the town. The sculpture represents one of the fishwives who once sold fish on this spot. The last 'fisherwife' Doris Marx stopped in march 2008, after 45 years - started New years eve 1963.
