The West Indies quicks put India through a stern test on a morning when they had to make do without Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul. Kieron Pollard stepped in to lead ahead of three former captains in the XI, won the toss and invited India to bat first. Ravi Rampaul's replacement, Tino Best, was the only errant bowler in the early exchanges. Kemar Roach and Darren Sammy took a wicket each, but Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik helped India recover with a watchful unbeaten 58-run stand for the third wicket.
The pitch at Sabina Park was damp, and it made for awkward and untrue bounce in the first hour. Roach and Sammy exploited it, as was evident from their combined figures of 12-5-30-2. Best, on the other hand, was quick but wayward and went for 38 in six overs. The West Indies fielding was a mixed bag: Darren Bravo took a catch off a free hit and began to celebrate, Sammy once did not go for a catch in front of him at gully, but the two wickets fell to special catches by Roach and Chris Gayle.
Rohit had to be patient, and had to put behind deliveries that made him look awkward. The barrage began from Best, but he bowled a no-ball early to let India off the hook. He got one rather quick delivery to jag back in and hit Rohit's glove even before he realised what was happening, but the ball didn't carry to gully. Sammy could have dived forward, but it was a slip-second decision. Rohit was 6 off 13 then, and responded with a ramp off a bouncer, which flew over third man.
