'Lockerbie bomber' to be released early - 13 Aug 09

Lockerbie Bomber Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi has dropped his appeal in order for Scottish officials to consider his request for early release from prison, after which he'd be tranferred to Libya. Earlier reports stated that Scottish judges have already  agreed to grant the convicted Lockerbie bomber an early release, but that is not actually confirmed. Judges meet in Edinburgh next week to make their decision, amid the expected public outcry over the possibility of al-Megrahi's potential early release. Abdel Basset Ali Al-Megrahi, who is suffering from prostate cancer, was convicted of killing all 270 passengers aboard Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988.

Al-Megrahi, who has prostate cancer, was told earlier this year he must withdraw his appeal in order to be released early from a Scottish prison on compassionate grounds.

Aside from either granting or denying early release, the court can order al-Magrahi to serve the rest of his prison term in Libya.
