Lok Sabha elections to begin from April 16

New Delhi, March 02: The countdown for the 15th Lok Sabha began on Monday afternoon when the Election Commission announced dates for the General Elections to be held in April-May.

Addressing a packed press conference at the Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi, along with Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and SY Quraishi, CEC N Gopalaswami announced that the Lok Sabha polls will be held in five phases between April 16 and May 13. The number of phases will vary from states to states.

Polls from April 16, counting on May 16
Polls to be held in 5 phases
Dates: April 16, 23, 30; May 7, May 13
Lok Sabha polls in J&K, UP in 5 phases.
Lok Sabha polls in Bihar in 4 phases.
Two-phase polls in MP, AP, Assam, Jharkhand, Orissa, Karnataka, Punjab and Manipur.
Remaining 15 states and all Union Territories would go to polls on a single day.

Counting of Votes on 16th May 2009 and the Lok Sabha has to be constituted within 2nd June 2009.
