London: Republicans stage protest at Diamond Jubilee Pageant
A thousand protesters turned up to attend the anti-monarchy protest in London.
Several speakers turned up including one from the Swedish Republican Group. She explained that when the recent Swedish royal baby was born in February, their Republican group received an extra 15,000 members.
The protest was originally planned to be by the Thames as the Met Police had only expected 300 protesters. As over 1000 turned up, they were moved to Tooley Street, well away from the river pageant. Many protesters were clearly unhappy about this.
There were only a few disturbances, one was caused by a drunk, sloppily dressed monarchist, carrying a bag of booze, who heckled some peaceful protesters.
After the event, one republican complained about some monarchists being criminal litter louts as tons of glass bottles, cigarettes, plastic Chinese made Union Jack flags and beer cans were chucked all over the road, which would normally lead to a fine. The Thames also was smothered in red, white and blue plastic balloons that could seriously affect wildlife.
He said that "monarchists need a strong role model to provide traditional values as some clearly don't have them".
