Reneging on an earlier statement made before Sunday's event, U.S. Evangelical preacher Lou Engle promoted Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009 at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda where reports indicate over 1,300 people gathered to hear Engle spread his messages of hate.
[When] he took the stage late on Sunday afternoon, with Ugandan politicians and pastors looking on, he praised the country’s “courage” and “righteousness” in promoting the bill.
“NGOs, the U.N., Unicef, they are all coming in here and promoting an agenda,” Mr. Engle said, referring to nongovernmental organizations. “Today, America is losing its religious freedom. We are trying to restrain an agenda that is sweeping through the education system. Uganda has become ground zero.”
Chilling First Hand Account Reported by Waymon Hudson at Huffington Post
Waymon Hudson at Huffington Post said he received a 'chilling first-hand report of TheCall Uganda rally' from a long-time Ugandan LGBT rights activist, who asked not to be identified.
According to the source:
He [Engle] called upon the government of Uganda to be firm and hold on its righteous stand against the evil. He mentioned that homosexuals have penetrated the educational system and Ugandans must be aware of the evil. He also lectured about how God planned marriage only between man and woman and that marriage is for procreation.
Engle Turns Already Volatile Situation Into An Untenable One
The danger of exporting radical U.S. religious thought surrounding homosexuality to other countries is real. Given controversy from the very beginning, Engle's rally in Uganda only served to heighten violence towards LGBT in Uganda.
With this backdrop of violence, Engle chose to hold a huge religious rally to further gin up anger towards gay people in Uganda. Before the rally, Engle claimed in a press release that he would not be there promoting the "kill the gays" bill, in an effort to stem some of the push-back he was getting from human rights groups for his panned rally. Not surprisingly, once he arrived in Uganda, his tune was very different and very dangerous.
Uganda's Minister of Ethics Speaks
James Buturo, Uganda's Minister of Ethics and supporter of Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009, spoke after Engle's left the grounds of Makerere University.
“These are desperate times, but we will not accept intimidation. It is our business to do what God wants. Pray for Bahati, and pray for the bill.”
Bahati, a born-again Christian and Ugandan MP, sponsored the 'Kill the Gays' Legislation.
