Love of my life and my 1971 Toyota Corolla Wagon

Don’t ask me why, but we decided to get married in February 1971. Ohio winter is not over in February; often the weather is at its worst. Anyway, back up a month. I promised my bride-to-be that I would get a new auto before our wedding so that we wouldn’t breakdown on our honeymoon drive to the ski resort at Oglebay Park, Wheeling West Virginia.

At the time, buying a Japanese car was controversial. It was as if the Japanese had invaded the homeland to finish off what they did not do in WWII. Anyway, I was so tired of fixing or repairing daily (FORD) that we both selected the Toyota Corolla Wagon. I liked it because it had extra room for our suitcases and fishing poles and stuff. She liked it because it was cute and came in a bright turquoise color. We both found our reasons to love the little car.

On February 13th, wedding day, we had a wonderful service at St. Joseph’s cathedral that featured 14 bridesmaids in red pant suits. In addition, my folk band played music.

On this day, the weather was snowy with 75 mph winds. It was a winter hurricane. My half of the church was damned near empty because my relatives lived far to the north and were snowed in.

When the service ended, my wife and I strolled down the aisle shaking hands and such until we reached our coats where we bundled up. All that we had to do was drive down the street to a hotel for the reception and a piece of cake.

My brother-in-law and my best man were in front of the church, freezing to death, though they got into a squabble about who would get to open the door for my wife. Somehow, the door was opened, and both let go of it as the wind blew it back against the hinge and into the side of the car. The door was so bent that I could not close it, thus cramping my honeymoon get away.

My mother had a brand new Ford and offered it for our use while the Toyota headed for repair. The wedding party wrote just married on the hood with shaving cream. The shaving cream froze and removed the paint.

Can’t blame Toyota or Ford for these natural disasters.

“Toyota tries media blitz to soothe over recallSunday print ads, Monday TV appearance to explain automaker’s plans

LAKEWOOD, New Jersey - Toyota has launched a media campaign to bolster its reputation for quality as nervous customers confront dealers across the country about faulty gas pedal systems.

Crisis-management experts said Sunday that the recall of millions of cars and trucks isn't the Japanese auto maker's only problem: its message to Toyota owners — delivered in full-page ads Sunday in 20 major newspapers — isn't as clear and reassuring as it needs to be.

On Monday, the head of Toyota's North American sales division, Jim Lentz, is scheduled to appear on NBC's The Today Show to detail the company's plans for a fix. Federal regulators have approved Toyota's plan to start sending parts to dealers in the coming days.”

Isn't this interesting I had a 1971 turquoise Toyota Corolla as well.  I took it to Germany in 1974 and saw the BMWs, Mercedes and other fast European cars fly by me on the Autobahn.

On hearing this, my wife just said, "You have met your people, Jim."

Nice story. Here in Japan most people are very angry with Toyota for the troubles they seem to have lately, not so much because it may affect sales to drop, but because Japanese take pride in their products and Toyota being their flag ship of sorts broth much shame in recent weeks and month. Even the Government expressed its dissapointment with the Car maker.

At Toyota some heads will roll and they will have to publicly apologise.

For the Japanese, the  Shame they will bear and bring unto their name is far worth then the sale they may lose.

I understand this, however, I am still driving my Totota and have no problems. It will outlast my useful life.

Toyota is the latest Japanese corporate icon making headlines for all the wrong reasons.News of the automaker's massive vehicle recalls over faulty gas pedals in the U.S. came just days after Japan Airlines, a once proud flag carrier, filed for bankruptcy, saddled with billions in debt.Sony has lost its lead in consumer gadgets to the likes of Apple Inc. and has suffered its own quality mishaps. Honda, Japan's No. 2 automaker, is recalling 646,000 cars worldwide because of a faulty window switch.

A 71 Corolla wagon was my first new car.  Altho bought in PA, it must've been a California version, as it had no carburetor heater. On a drive across PA on the turnpike in a snowstorm, the carb iced up and I had to stop every 20 mi. or so to remove a gasoline sno-cone from the barrels. And it was so tinny that I dented it from the inside by hauling a keg of beer in the back which rolled around and made a bulge on the rear fender.
