Gas prices are down in the United States and these prices haven't been seen in years. A friend of mine who drives the family car said earlier today, "I filled up my car and it was $40. Over the summer it was something close to $95. It's so cheap now!"

Drivers returning home from the Christmas holiday this weekend will be paying less for gasoline than they have in in five years, according to a survey of credit card swipes at service stations across the nation..

The national average price dropped for its eighth consecutive day to $1.630 a gallon, down 1.2 cents from the previous day, according to the motorist group AAA.

The national average last hit close to the current price on Feb. 18, 2004, when it averaged at $1.63.

Prices are down 60% from the record high of $4.114 a gallon touched on July 17.

Gas remains is below $2 in all 48 contiguous sates and the District of Columbia, according to AAA. The highest average gas price was in Alaska ($2.53), while the cheapest was found in Utah ($1.45).

The AAA figures, compiled by Oil Price Information Services, are state-wide averages based on credit card swipes at up to 100,000 service stations across the nation. To top of page

I really feel sorry for the oil companies what with all the low prices and all!   NOT!!!!!!  It is certainly nice to be able to sit down again without all that pain.  Sadd that the economy had to melt down to achieve this.  Wo!

Timely story. Prices are low in NJ, really low...I think I saw $1.43 to $1.37/ gallon on State Route 130 yesterday.

it's $1.43 in Northern Michigan right now!  :D  Time to fill up for the first time in a very long time!

I just went out and it was back up to $1.64 per gallon again. bummer...

And one other thing: Tomorrow's Gas? That looks and smells like a scam. One clue is that the domain name wasn't registered until a little over a week ago. Another is that "Robert" has been posting comments like the one here all over the Internet. Without much more complete information about whose behind this and how they fulfill your purchases, I wouldn't touch this "service."

Also, just for discussion's sake: What are the consequences of the Great Oil Price Crash of '08? Will car buyers flock to the Big Three to resume buying SUVs (that's the *original* Detroit bailout -- consumers buying big, high-profit margin gas guzzlers from the U.S. auto companies, and those same companies doing next to nothing to improve vehicle efficiency or explore alternative vehicles)? Most cities around the country have experienced a spike in public transit ridership since gas prices went up; now that they're down, will people get back in their cars (and traffic jams)? And is it time, as some energy analysts suggest, for us to impose high new gas taxes as a way of paying for the various bailouts/economic stimuli/infrastructure renewal projects we've committed ourselves to (not to mention huge state deficits from coast to coast)?

My answers to the above, for what it's worth: I hope not; I hope not; hell, yes.

Well, low gas prises may help the economy in the short run, however they certainly do not help the environment at large.

At the height of gas prices, it took almost $120 to fill up our family SUV, then when it got down to $1.69 per gallon it only took around $40-50 to fill up - so much less painful!
Unfortunately prices are starting to go up again....hopefully not for long. It's nice to be able to afford to drive now and again.

Gasoline is still 2.50 in Alaska, but in the villages it can be as much as $9

The amazing thing about gas prices the day I took this was they changed 8 cents at this same station! By 3 pm this sign read $1.41!

I've seen a station in my town jump as much as $.20 per gallon in one day...but it never seems to drop in such large amounts?  Hmm...

Of course its wonderful that gas prices are way down - but it certainly won't stay that way for long.  We can't allow these low gas prices to put us all in a complacent stupor thinking that everything is ok now.

We absolutely have to get off foreign oil and move our economy to renewable energy.

Makes you wonder if all that fuss was really warranted. Did we suddenly discover more oil?? Not!

I do agree that we have to get off oil, though, and these low prices won't encourage that.

The oil companies just wanted to remind us how defendant we are on them...we just about fell apart when the prices jumped so high, and then after we couldn't take it any longer, they drop them, and we all fall in "love" with them again...

These were gas prices at Costco, known for its low prices, only 2 months ago. Things have certainly changed.

Apply for gas card

The low gas prices are slowly going away again. Paying $1.95 and I have a feeling it will only be going up from here.
