The Milad-un-Nabi , the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed is celebrated as a national festival in Sri Lanka.

This morning’s (Mar 10) LTTE suicide bomb attack at the Jumma mosque at Godapitiya, in Akurassa, in the Matara,   which left 15 dead and more than 40 injured, goes to reiterate their total disregard towards other communities and religious groups.

In fact, it is ridiculous to expect any from a group, which feeds on the very people it claims to represent[sic], lead by a psychotic megalomaniac.

In an attack which surpassed their previous standards[sic], on August 4, 1990 around 30 heavily armed  LTTE cadres  raided four mosques in the town of Kattankudi, where over 300 people were prostate in Isha prayers, killing of over 147 Muslim men and boys, spraying automatic fire and hurling hand grenades at the worshipers.

It was only a few days earlier that LTTE issued a warning to the citizens of Katthankudi, a Muslim town 140 miles east of Colombo that they should vacate the town "or face death". At the time, of the 60,000 residents of the relatively prosperous Kattankudi, 90 per cent were Muslim.

In an act of ethnic cleansing, in  October 1990, the LTTE forcibly expelled the 75,000 strong Muslim population from the Northern Province.

On August 11, 1990 LTTE cadres attacked Div. 3 & 6, Eravur, killing 116 Muslims.

Later, in October 1991, female LTTE cadres and child soldiers massacred 109 Muslim men, women and children in Palliyagodella, after tensions grew between the LTTE and the Muslim community.

Important story:  I can quite believe this - it was outrageous that Prabakharan wanted the Muslim enclaves in the East as well as the North!  He is a nasty, nasty thug!

Great post Sudharaka. Thank you for this.

I hope the world will open their eyes and see what these so-called "freedom fighters" and "rebels" are doing.

One thing I will never understand is the term "rebels" being used regarding a group who does these barbaric and gruesome acts. If this is not terrorism, then what is?

Over and over and over we suffer this - it is our people who are dying. They kill the Sinhalese, they kill the Muslims, and they also kill the Tamils.

My government is trying to put a stop to this madness, and doing it in the best possible way. LTTE is rich, is spread all over the world, and it can buy a lot of people in top places. So what you hear from supposedly neutral parties sometimes can be things that LTTE got their pawns (who are inside good organizations) to say. One example is, the UN accusing GOSL of putting cluster bombs on a hospital. What happened to that accusation? How did it originate? Why would anyone in the UN make up such a story?

Think about it.

I found another example.

"We have no reason to believe the ship flying the ICRC flag was targeted by shells which were falling around it while trying to unload supplies," said Carla Haddad.

The bomb attack at the Jumma mosque at Godapitiya, in Akurassa, in the Matara seems to be a work of intelligence agencies to divert the international attention on the genocide of innocent civilian Tamils by the Sri Lankan government forces. We know LTTE use suicide bombs, but there are various attacks in the southern Sri Lanka that were carried out by Sri Lankan/foreign intelligence agencies for variety or reasons.

I recommend you to read the book "Commonsense 101 - For the BRAINWASHED.
It is the LTTE Intelligence Wing that is involved here and you won't have to grope blindly to get at it had any sort of commonsense is left in you.

1
Paschen

I would not use religion as a lever here. We all know that terrorism has little to do with religion. In Iraq, Turkey the Terrorist are all Muslim and kill Muslim at the Mosque. Same for the RAF in Germany that used to kill their own people in super markets and so on... This is political and not religious. Religion is used as an excuse here and to deepen the divide.

Dangerous rhetoric you are starting here.

2
sudharaka

I would rather attribute this kind of behaviour to lack of respect to the humanity.
Not only the LTTE refuses to integrate with the Sinhalese majority, but also with the Muslim minority.

2
Hiranya Malwatta

@ Paschen >

I think you have misunderstood the context here. 'Muslim' is not a word in Sri Lanka essentially used only for the religion. But the ethnic group 'Moores' who are of 'Muslim' faith are commonly called Muslims in Sri lanka and have been purposely targeted by the LTTE over and over during this conflict.

They wanted the Muslims and Sinhalese both communities out of their ethnically pure land that they called Eelam, and massacred so many Muslims for that cause, and that is the truth.

I suggest you read more about the history of this war.

Firham Abdullah

To add what Hiranya said in response to Paschen -

The LTTE had been trying for years to persuade the Moor Muslim community to support its cause of Tamil Eelam. To futility, of course. Even though Tamil-speaking, the Moors do not regard themselves as ethnically Tamil and therefore do not share LTTE / Tamil aspirations.

LTTE's atrocities towards the Moor Muslims must necessarily be seen in this light also - best described as revengeful acts for what it must believes is a betrayal.

The bomb blast in Godapitiya is the effect of internal conflict and contradictions within the ministers of ruling Rajapakse government. Rajapakse government simply elimninated it's own rivals within the party and coalition. There are previous such incidents like Perrera, Jeyaraj Fernandopillai - eliminated by the government through the support of Karuna (current minister who runs his own faction or para-military group. He is a former LTTE who killed and chased the Muslims in the East.) and the intelligence forces. A government that not only kills its people, but also it's own ministers. Sri Lankan forces ambushed and executed atleast 5 Tamil parliament members in the last 3 years. Every time they eliminate someone they dont like/want it's easy to blame on LTTE. Not all the bomb blast and suicide killings in Sri lanka is carried out by LTTE. So the Sri Lankan government as a state is also culprit of violence and killings.

Much has been said about LTTE. Is the Sri Lanka conflict a one-sided issue? Is it just the so called 'terrorism'?

Majority Sinhalese dominance towards the 'Muslims' and the 'estate Tamils' are forgotten and slipped down over all discussions carried out by the nationalist Sri Lankans. Tamils struggle from the 1948 is simply hidden and the 1970s born LTTE is blamed to cover-up the peacefull political struggle of Tamils prior to the birth of LTTE. S.J.V Selvanayagam, a Tamil parlimentarian struggled (in Gandhian principles) with his Tamil people for peaceful political solution for their rights. The Sinhalese politicians perpatuated violence at the peace-loving non-violent protect fasting lead by Selvanayagam. He voice in the Sri Lankan parliament for the Tamils rights were simply ignored.

This source of the conflict is not the LTTE or the so called 'terrorism'. It was/is and will be the Sinhalese ultra natioanlist chauvenism. War is not a solution to any conflict, that will be the case for Sri Lanka too. LTTE proposals for devolution of power through Interim Adiministration and then Tsunami Rehabilitation proposals were simply ignored and by the Government of Sri Lanka and it started a genocidal war on the Tamils. One who is conscious of the history of Sri Lanka will know this fact. Historically Tamils had their seperate nation in Sri Lanka. Colonial history for it's administrative purpose united both Tamils and Sinhalese and they transfered the political power to the Sinhalese in 1948 when they left the island. What happened next was simply the dominance of the powerholders, the sinhalese (politicians). Number of riots and pograms were systematically carried out on the Tamils and Muslims by the Sinhalese. There was various talks but with out any peace. Why? As a dominant side the Sinhalese nation did not show any possibilities to respect the rights of Tamils for a political solution as per their aspiration. How can someone else decide for others? Sinhalese mindset is to decide a solution that the Tamils don't accept. Buddha preached non-violence. King Asoka renounced violence and adored Buddhism. Buddhism spread to Sri Lanka from India. But today's Buddhist monks comes to street to pressure the governments to go for war. They are not for a political solution fearing the division of lands. The irony is there is already divided minds and two nations exist in the island. Sinhalese natioanlism equally kills the innocent Tamil civilians in state terror - using indiscriminate multi-artillery barrage, aerial bombs, cluster bombs, fire-bombs even on the ICRC centres, hospitals, schools. When military might seems the solution in all nationalist Sinhalese there is no solution to this conflict and no peace either. Nationalism blocks the hearts, minds, ears and eyes and all senses of Sinhalese to praise a war that kills it's own people, with whom they have to live as one nation or seperate nations.

Dangerous nationalism is the success of today's Rajapakse government. That's the reason his brothers and the President himself could hide all his corruptions, economic problems, unemployment and poverty that the Sinhalese people face in the south. It is in their name billions of dollars are used just for weapons to kill people. Those who speak or write against or killed like Lasantha or abducted and forced to disappear or get killed with no investigation and justice. During last 20 years the Sri Lankan governments impunity kills not only the Tamils but also the Sinhalese. It is one of the nation that not only control its media but also kill the journalists. Sri Lankan news is controlled and propagated ny the army. They even use the NowPublic to propagate.

Both Tamils and Sinhalese need to talk about peace and respecting eachother's political right not just based on their constitution, but on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Civil Political Rights and other International laws. War is not a solution. War can capture lands, not the people. No one will win war.

...there are various attacks in the southern Sri Lanka that were carried out by Sri Lankan/foreign intelligence agencies...

Now

...The bomb blast in Godapitiya is the effect of internal conflict and contradictions within the ministers of ruling Rajapakse government...

Whats next? Was the Lahore Attack plot hatched by the Rajapakses too, with a view to distract the international community?

In fact the history lecture copied from the Eelam/Eezham websites is getting a bit outdated, don't you think? It is time that you all cook a newer, more plausible version.

Full marks for the usage of the terms such as GENOCIDE, CLUSTER-BOMBS, PROPAGANDA and reference to MEDIA FREEDOM.

Excellent comment, don't you think?

1
Rohan Perris

There is no contradiction in my view. Those who read the comments with out a chauvinist mind and have the knowledge of the Sri Lankan politics will understand it.

Who is responsible for the white van abductions? Killings and attacks on the media personnels? Who killed Lasantha, the editor of the Sunday Leader (http://www.thesundayleader.lk/)?

History is not just one-sided as it is taught by the Sri Lankan nationalists in schools and preached in the public propaganda machines. If the history mentioned in my comments is 'cooking' I wish the reader opens the eyes if its asleep. Can anyone wake those who pretend to be sleeping? Nationalism can cause destruction and it is being proved in the case of Sri Lanka by the sinhala ultra-nationalists. There are innocent Sinhalese who do not subscribe to these ultra-nationalist chauvenism, for whom politics becomes much difficult in a military run regime of Rajapakse.

Was the Lahore attack on cricketers also the work of LTTE? Ultra-nationalists may blame that too. This is the problem of the southern Sri Lanka. Finding truth need a search without inhibitions and prejudice. But do the nationalist anywhere have that?

1
sudharaka

I actually admire your meticulous arrangement of words and phrases to sound as if you have a balanced[sic] point of view.

Who is responsible for the white van abductions? Killings and attacks on the media personnels? Who killed Lasantha, the editor of the Sunday Leader?

May be you can enlighten the NP viewers, but with proof, not mere wordplay or baseless accusations.

Enough on the history because the story is actually jaded. It is also hertening to have found at least some of the Sinhalese innocent. May be those who subscribe to the "HOMELAND MYTH"

With regard to inhibitions and prejudice, it is opportune time to practice what has been preached.

LTTE is more concerned about their survival in their 40kmsq these days, they got more at hand than hatching an international plot.

1. In the name of "fighting terror" Sri Lankan government blocked food and medicine to Tamils in the North - Vanni area.

2. International Media and the International Humanitarian Organisations were chased out of the area. So the government want that the effect of the war on Tamil people can't be reported or recorded and exposed to the International Community. This is the trick played in all genocides.

3. Indiscriminate bombings and killings of Tamils by the government forces in the conflict area and in the 'protected zones' announced by the government itself.

4. IDPs are detained in the army controlled camps without any freedom to move or express their sufferings - no access to International Media. Even the John Holmes visit was planned in a way to selected camps with no free access to Tamils to express their sufferings.

5. Tamil youths in the IDP camps were abducted, tortured in torture camps (run by intelligence agency and the para-military forces) and burned or buried.

6. Young women in the IDP camps were raped, molested, sexually tortured and killed and burned.

7. Secret instruction to the hospitals to forcefully abort the pregnant Tamil women IDPs.

8. Children are separated from parents and spouses are separated from each other in the IDP camps.

9. Media is threatened not to publish anything against the armed forces - those who did against caught killed or attacked or detained without trial.

10. When there is a huge cry for food or medicine sending boats and then blaming as attacked by LTTE. Then making the Tamil civilians to starve. One such blaming was done by the government two days back. But the government agent in that area mentioned, there was no such attack on the boat. BBC Tamil radio did the interview with the government agent.

There are many more such crimes....

Creating this drama will not work for long time. Sri Lankan government is violating all the international humanitarian laws.  How will one call the Sri Lankan state perpatuating such a pogram on the Tamils? Peace? Unity? The convention on genocide have a different name - Genocide!

If the Sri Lankan government is not guilty let it open the doors to the International Media and observers. But, it will not. Because it's agenda will not work if there are international observers or UN peace keeping force inside.

In the current Sri Lankan conflict is the Sri Lankan government is 'holy' or 'messiah of peace'? If so, why it does the following?

  1. Why block food and medicines to innocent Tamil civilians in Vanni? Economic blockade to Tamil civilians = 'war on terrorism'? How will it be justified under International Humanitarian Laws?
  2. International media and observers were cahed out of Tamil areas by the government so that the war and the violations are cannot be reported and recorded. So that the perpetuators may go free from punishment. This is a clear sign in all genocides.
  3. Indiscriminate aerial bombings and artillery barrage by the armed forces on the innocent (non-combatants) civilians in the conflict area and the 'safety zones' announced by the government itself. Why? Is it not because they are Tamils? Which government does that to it's own people? What will you call that?
  4. Fear of starvation and death what else they can do, except to be in Internally Displaces People (IDP) camps? Why do the government do then the bombings and block food? It expect that fear of the bombs all the Tamils are moved out of their own places - 'home land' and detained in the IDP camps controlled by the army itself. The land can then be grabbed by government as 'high security zones' for army camps and they will be chased out of their own land (Around 94,000 Tamil civilians who are from 27,600 families languish as IDPs with their families and friends as well as in refugee camps for 19 years in Jaffna (North). Their land is still under the control of the army). So is there any hope that the IDPs will be re-installed in their homes? NO!
  5. What is the condition of the camps for IDPs? Army control the camps and there is no freedom of movement. Spouses are seperated from their eachother. Children are seperated from parents. International media and observers do not have access to the camps. Tamil people in these camps are not allowed to express their sufferings to the 'ouside world'. Even during teh UN official, John Holmes visit the army, government officials and the ministers controlled the access in the camps Tamils to express their sufferings. Only 'choosen camps' by the government were visited by him - one can understand the drama then.
  6. Young women IDPs in the camps are molested, raped, sexually-abused, killed and burned.
  7. Tamil youths in the IDP camps are abducted, tortured in torture chambers (run by army intelligence and para-military forces), killed and burried or burned.
  8. Hospitals are issued secret instructions to abort the pregnant Tamil women IDPs to eliminate the Tamil generation.
  9. Media is warned by the ministry of defence and President himself not to publish anything against or critic to the army. Those who did not obey to those orders were executed, attacked and detained with out trail.
  10. Due to the outcry for food a boat was sent to the Vanni area and then called back two days ago. The government accused that the boat was attacked by LTTE. But the government agent in that area gave an interview to BBC Tamil radio that there was no such attack on boat. Why do the Sri Lankan government plays this drama? It want to evacuate by force the 81000 families, 3,30,000 innocent civilians by creating an atmosphere of fear through starvation (by blocking their food) and death (in the bombings of the armed forces). When they are in Vanni due to their outcry and the international pressure the government creates the food 'boat attack/convoy attack' drama. Then its stop sending food and punish them for upholding their own political views as Tamils.
  11. The number of Tamil civilians living in the Vanni area is 3,30,000 as confirmed by the government agent of Mullaithivu Parthipan in the BBC Tamil interview. But Sri Lankan government says only around 70,000 people are there. This contradictory statement on the numbers by Sri Lankan government shows a plan for a mass killing in the coming days?

Atleast 5 Tamil parliamentarians were ambushed by the armed forces in last three years, one among them was shot dead in a Christmas mass in the cathedral, while receiving holly communion from the Bishop. Others were ambushed while returning to or from their constituencies. Was that because they were the member in the Sri Lankan parliament and democratically representing their views? This is how the 'messiah of peace', 'holy' Sri Lankan government respect the International laws and its democrasy. It is crazy indeed!

There are many such drama... How will one call the action of Sri Lankan government? Peace? unity? Justice? 'fighting Terror'? Internatioal Laws have a different name to it. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/p_genoci.htm) call it as GENOCIDE!

Frankly, I wonder how its done. Was the story created beforehand and adjusted later according to the definition or the definition was looked up and then the story was assembled to suit it. Either way, pity there's no Pulitzer for copy paste journalism.

10.

After arriving with food supplies and aid for civilians, the ship, anchored off the coast at Puthmatalan, was unloading its cargo on to small boats when, the ICRC said, shells fell two- to three-hundred metres away.

I can see by the amount you are writing that this is a political propaganda attempt to change opinion. At a time your terrorist group is a stage of its extinction, your cause is causing many innocent people to die on both sides of the conflict.

It's time to stop in the name of peace, your terrible rain of violence is at and end. It got you no where and you should all be damned.

Stop in  the name of your God.

azzayindia,

they have become desperate. i didn't in my wildest dreams think that they would shoot the people in such large numbers as they are doing now. yesterday there were close to 300 people trying to escape in boats and they have shot at most of them successfully. the people who escaped say they even shot the people on the beach. It's so terrible to see the pictures of the young ones crying. They have been doing too many stupid things lately.

//It's so terrible to see the pictures of the young ones crying. They have been doing too many stupid things lately.//

Have you seen the pictures of the people killed and tear in pieces in the artillery barrage and aerial bombings carried out by the SL army? Have you seen the pictures of the women who were burned? Why these Tamil people have to suffer like this? Who corner them with out food and medicine?

more

Sri Lankan military sexual abuse on Tamil women

Do you expect them to be peace with you? Will they after these....?

There are more worst pictures. Will you support your government if it does the same to you or your family members? Nationalist may do!

If you stop your worship of Prabhakaran the serial killer, and then provide evidence of who burned the ppl in ur pictures (footage of statements given by ppl related to the incident is good enough) - then I will reply to you.

1
Hiranya Malwatta

@Rohan Perris (not verified) >

Anyway, it is terrible to see the innocents being killed, no matter who did it, no matter who's fault it is. To me, seeing so many dead LTTE cadres brings the same pain as seeing the dead bodies of the Army soldiers. All very young people, who are just beginning their adult lives. The LTTE cadres who fight and die are also innocents in my opinion. This ruination of Sri Lankan lives has been going on for too long, and to stop it from keep happening another 30-50 years Prabhakaran and the other LTTE leaders MUST BE eliminated. And for that, so many others have to die in battle. Sad. Very sad. But in the long run, that is the only way a bigger portion of Tamil and Sinahala lives of Sri Lanka can be saved.

The other issues can only be addressed after the cancer called Prabhakaran is eliminated. Majority of Tamils in Sri Lanka know this and some openly say it. It is only the Tamil Diaspora (not all of them) who wants Prabhakaran and LTTE saved.

2
sudharaka

There is a simple solution. Ask YOUR LTTE to let go the Tamil civilians they forcibly keep as a human shield. I say this because now you have shown your true colors and it was the likes of you and fellow ARMCHAIR SOLDIERS of the DIASPORA have kept LTTE going.

2
Babel-Fish

Stop this killing and murder now, how can any one feel sorry for you, you reap what you sow. Your wasting your time spreading propaganda here as we can see that it is what it is.

LTTE must surrender, no excuse for any terrorist group in the name of religion, caste, creed, ethnicity.

My heart goes to innocent civilians caught in cross-fire, Rajapakse's govt has big deal at hand for IDP's.Hope his preaching's will be effective in practice.

Nevertheless LTTE must be rooted out completely.
