LTTE said that they are ready to sign cease fire agreement with Srilanka. But Sri Lankan Government rejected the offer and said that there is no agreement with LTTE unless they put down their weapons. Since they have lost control of almost the entire northern part of the country, LTTE approached UN and agreed for cease fire.

Battered and cornered, the Tamil Tigers on Monday sought a ceasefire and peace talks, but Sri Lanka rejected the appeal and asked the rebels to surrender unconditionally.

LTTE urges global community to effect ceasefire

"Our position is that they must lay down arms and surrender. There is no shift in the government's position in this regard," military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

He said that Sri Lankan troops had confined the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in a 73 sq km stretch of land in Mullaitivu district.

LTTE suffers heavy losses as army operations enter last phase

"There is no question of a ceasefire now. When the LTTE surrenders with its weapons, there will be a ceasefire automatically," Nanayakkara added.

Sri Lankan Defence Secreatry termed the offer from LTTE as a joke.

“There is nothing to talk about. Everybody knows that the LTTE wants a ceasefire, but it is not an option for them anymore. They have to surrender or we will crush them. This is a joke.”

My question too, why would this be a smart move?

Only smart move the current Sri Lankan Government can make is to sit down talks with LTTE or any other elected Tamils representatives for Tamils Autonomy.

I am just waiting for the day for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue a warrant for the arrest of Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa brothers.

Hiranya Malwatta,

You think it is ok to continuously annihilate the Tamil Community? LTTE was not there in 1948. You should read the continuous human rights violations performed by all the Sri Lanka Sinhalese Governmetns since 1948.

LTTE is just a by product of all the atrocities conducted by the Sri Lankan Governments on Tamils. Getting rid of LTTE would not solve the problem; LTTE is the most agreed representatives of Tamils right now. Hence the Sri Lankan Government is getting rid of all the Tamils in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Sri Lanka to silence the Tamils autonomy requirement. Unfortunately for the Rajapaksa Brothers, there are many Tamils voices out side of Sri Lanka in the western world.

I think Sri Lanka Government is doing exactly that now. Only problem is that the LTTE is not talking anything back.

Ofcourse...! However LTTE seem to lost their voice now. Looks like they need some of the Tamil Voices right there in Sri Lanka immediately - not in the western world.

Any volunteers ..??

well! its sad that leader such as Mahatma Gandhiji was born as a leader ...Nehru Gandhi lead people to freedom and did justice to the Indian citizens ...Indira Gandhi - story goes on to say even when fainted in a demonstration against to British the Indian flag was flyin high and stood firmly on the ground... These Great leaders Did and lived for the Indian citizens from the day they were born. What politics does Rajiv Gandhi knew other than using his ancestrial name to come to power... Shame ...a leader is born for the people and dies for the people not using his mother's or grandfathers name to fool the indian citizens to come to power... Today if it was your community who care abt the rebels in your community... but  kills your entire family would it be fine with you? think practically ... Today 10000 tamils are dead ... Check BBC for your reference This is a genocide ... The news that comes out is solidly from the SL government ...now BBC n American saterllites have proven that the Srilankan government as murders... after this what ever you say is useless... Because killing tamils will not end ...same as when hitler thought he killed jews ... As jews arose from their ashes to get their country... wat difference would it make with sri lankan tamils around the world?
