Luigi Garlaschelli Claims To Have Reproduced The Shroud Of Turin
Italian scientist Luigi Garlaschelli is alleging that he has reproduced the Shroud of Turin -- a relic in the Christian religion that many believe proves the existence of Jesus Christ. The Shroud is a piece of linen that bears a depiction of a man widely thought to be Jesus Christ. Many Christians believe that the crucified body of Jesus Christ was wrapped in the Shroud after his death.
Over the course of years since the discovery of the Shroud, there have been an ongoing debate over the authenticity of the Shroud. In 1988, a series of chemical tests concluded that the Shroud dates back to the Middle Ages. But, a lot of criticism about the way the tests were conducted followed, keeping the debate going.
Garlaschelli, a chemistry professor, says he reproduced the Shroud with the tools available in the Middle Ages.
Garlaschelli reproduced the full-sized shroud using materials and techniques that were available in the middle ages.
They placed a linen sheet flat over a volunteer and then rubbed it with a pigment containing traces of acid. A mask was used for the face.
The pigment was then artificially aged by heating the cloth in an oven and washing it, a process which removed it from the surface but left a fuzzy, half-tone image similar to that on the Shroud. He believes the pigment on the original Shroud faded naturally over the centuries.
They then added blood stains, burn holes, scorches and water stains to achieve the final effect.

Good story. This scientist is one of those folks who works to discredit the miraculous. I am interested in his reproduction.

I have watched how over several decades the Shroud has been proven and disproven and then the disproof was reversed and then disproved again.
Actually, I think it is a perfect rendition of the head of the Knights Templar who was burnt at the stake when Phillip the Fair made war on them to pay his bills.

Maybe, and i hope so, Garlaschelli got a point about it. I would be pleased if he could also reproduce the findings in palinology in his shroud, so that it gets more similar to the turinian one. Besides, it would also be great if he assumed he produced the same EFFECT, but in a different aproach, once it is confirmed that tha image in the turinian shroud was produced by a heat source with a human shape and with mass=zero. If he ACTUALLY reproduced this, making something´s mass = zero, he deserves all credits. If not, deserves laughing and nothing else. I think he'll get it...

Luigi Garlaschelli will have to ask his boss, the "Italian association of atheists and agnostics," for more money to concoct an explanation for the 12th century (Pray Codex) finely detailed illustration of the Shroud of Edessa (nowadays called Shroud of Turin).

Reuters says, " a feat that he says proves definitively that the linen some Christians revere as Jesus Christ's burial cloth is a medieval fake." If he said this, that is an illogical conclusion. "I reproduced it, therefore it's a fraud." No, Garlaschelli made something that RESEMBLES the Shroud, and therefore - nothing. Whether it is fraudulent is still unknown. Luigi Garlaschelli's pigment approach is nothing that hasn't been considered back in the 70s and was ruled out when considering the properties and evidence in the actual Shroud. Look how Reuters biases the story with language like "hard-core." -- "The accuracy of the 1988 tests was challenged by some hard-core believers who said restorations of the Shroud in past centuries had contaminated the results." Hard-core immediately brings to mind a fringe bunch of people, a minority of extremists. Read this for details! www.shroud.com/latebrak.htm

To Michael Fichera: Goodness, you sound as if you actually studied science. Yes, even if he did reproduce the same effect (which actually has not been proven and, oddly enough, he is not forthcoming with the material) does not mean that the Shroud was created this way. At best, this would merely serve as a possible guide for seeking evidence that might suggest this as a possibility. The fact that Luigi Garlaschelli is making this leap in logic (which he actually knows better than to do) suggests other motives (e.g. PR, ego, etc.). By the way, the images he has posted on line don't really work much like the Shroud to begin with and he has side stepped allowing other researchers to exam the result, which is strangely enough against the scientific process. By the way, I don't lean much one way or the other on the Shroud, so I am being open minded.
