Several people died and many more injured in a massive M5 crash in Somerset on November 5, 2011. The M5 crash involved as many as 27 vehicles, several of which caught fire.
According to a local newspaper, the M5 crash occurred "the motorway close to junction 25 near Taunton at around 8.30 pm."
Rescue workers fought to extinguish the fire and free people who were trapped in their cars.
As many as 40 people were treated in local hospitals.
What caused the November 5, 2011 M5 crash?
An exact cause of the crash is not known but rain and fog may have been a factor. There may have been more traffic than normal due to festivities related to Guy Fawkes Day.
According to police, “The motorway has now been closed in both directions from junctions 23 to 26. It is likely to remain closed for a number of hours. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.”
