Madagascar: crisis escalates

It looks as if another African country is sliding into chaos.  The latest events in Madagascar have the opposition supporters occupying the prime minister's office and proclaiming Andry Rajoelina the new prime minister.

There is only one demand - that's the departure of Ravalomanana," Rajoelina said.

"We will wait four hours. I, Andry Rajoelina, am ready to carry out the democratic handover of power ... I am going to go to Iavoloha [presidential palace] to say goodbye to him."

Opposition supporters with a military escort entered the existing prime minister's office on Saturday without meeting any resistance.

They proclaimed Monja Roindefo Zafitsimivalo as the new prime minister.
