Madelaine McCann case 'set to be dropped'

UPDATE: 12:58PM EST

The investigation into the Madeleine McCann is actually not over as no formal decision has been taken according to Portugal's attorney general.

Fernando Pinto Monteiro said the case continued to be assessed, after Portuguese media reports that police will close it due to lack of evidence.

Parents Kate and Gerry McCann are both official suspects in the inquiry, along with a third man, Robert Murat.

The Portuguese police investigation into the dissapearance of British girl Madeleine McCann while her parents were on vacation in the Argave has been closed.

Detectives have shut their files and referred the case to the public prosecutor for a final decision, local sources confirmed.

A lack of evidence has been cited as the reason for the case being shelved.

It means that Gerry and Kate McCann are likely to be cleared as suspects in their daughter's disappearance, along with British expatriate Robert Murat.
