Majority of NYS supports marriage equality for all New Yorkers
An April 20th Siena Poll shows a majority of New York state supports marriage equality for all New Yorkers. Although support is strong in all regions of the state, support that is strongest is in New York City.
By a margin of 53% to 39%, those surveyed in New York say the state Senate should pass legislation to legalize same-sex marriage. If the Senate passes the measure, Paterson promises to quickly sign the measure into law.
Among those polled, Democrats strong support gay marriage in New York by a 59% to 35% margin while Republicans oppose it by nearly the same spread, 59% to 31%.
Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith says he won't put it to a vote until it has enough support to pass. Paterson wants the Senate to vote no matter what so we can see where our elected officials stand. The same bill passed the Legislature two years ago but died in the Senate.
